im about to set up someone a wireless network on a wanadoo broadband connection
what would you suggest as being the best modem/router (wireless) for this task

Same as any other ADSL. Popular one on here is the Netgear DG834G.

Given the issues it seems to have with the IPStream Max trials (drifting SNR margin for one), it isn't the best of options though.

you need a adsl router that supports PPPoA (Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM) with a built in modem and wifi would be nice to have as well

i use the Netgear DG834GT as a built in modem firewall and Wireless Access Point

OCuk wireless routers can be found here Overclockers UK Routers

seems ocuk dont sell my model anymove, but they do sell the newest version called: Netgear DG834PN 108Mbps Rangemax Wireless ADSL2 Modem/Router/Switch/Firewall (NW-083-NG)

that router works on both adsl/adsl2

Pretty useless for ADSL due to the lack of an ADSL modem in it. Ignore routers are are marketed as a Cable/DSL (note the lack of A for ADSL in there) and get an ADSL wireless router. Netgear DG834G would be my suggestion.
