What's the best upgrade GPU card for my build with an i7 4790K without bottleneck problems?

:( my 980ti just decided to poop itself. Now it is a posh paperweight. Also in the same situation as the OP and looking at my options. Holding out before doing a full system upgrade as the refresh isn't too far away.

I ran a 4790k with a RTX 2070 Super and the 4790K wasn't causing bottlenecks and it wasn't overclocked either. I was mostly playing on 4k though.

I would have bought the OCUK 3060ti with 5 year warranty at about £450, which would give you good performance now and also when you are ready to upgrade your cpu. It's a bit more than the MRSP yes, but it does give 2 years more warranty for the price than the FE edition, and as you know its not fun having a gpu pack up outside of warranty

It's not though, if you look at the techpowerup review, the RTX 3060 has the best price / performance of any of the new GPUs that came out this year by a significant margin at 1440p and 1080p resolutions, especially if you take reference / founders models out of the equation.

The RTX 3070 FE actually comes out slightly ahead of the RTX 3060 TI FE in price / performance in all resolutions.

This review shows a good increase with the 3060ti, https://youtu.be/Hmpi7hX915s?t=963

However, if you do have some old stuff that you can trade in at the secondhand shop that would go some way towards paying for a 2nd handcard from them, whether it is an older gen card or a new gen card.

The RTX 3060 is straightforward upgrade from a R9 390 also, with 4GB more VRAM, whereas the RTX 3060 TI has the same amount.

Nvidia only included 12GB on the RTX 3060, as a counter move to AMD increasing VRAM amounts to 12GB or over on most of their GPUs, vs their last gen.

It's plenty to play games at 60 FPS at 1080p or 1440p, convince me otherwise :D.

Unfortunately, this now comes to mind:

60 FPS at 4k needs a faster CPU than 60 FPS at 1080p. This is a silly myth that a CPU doesn't matter at 4k.

Not all 1080p gamers play at ultra high framerates. People just assume.

Yes, I said “little or no”. No was wrong, true. But it’s not a huge increase requiring a CPU upgrade (which was the original point). I didn’t say it doesn’t matter; I said it shifted the bottleneck towards the GPU.

Edit: Was thinking of around 60fps for 1080p and 30fps for 4k, rather than 140fps or something.

Doesn't look like that to me, the 3060ti is clearly on top and look how close it is to the 3070 performance aswell vs how far back the 3060 non ti is.

Based on the average framerates (above) at 1440p, seen above:
There was an RTX 3060 TI on Overclockers for £420 (pre-order), so the cost per frame = £3.88

There was an RTX 3060 on Overclockers for £370 (pre-order), so the cost per frame = £4.40.

Apparently, the 12GB 'ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3060 Twin Edge' is £300, so the cost per frame = £3.57, so I think it depends really on how cheap you can buy them for in reality...

Either way, both cards have a pretty similar cost per frame.

And if you get a 3060 Ti FE for £369 (as I and a few others did last week) the cost per frame is £3.42, and as said, it’s almost 3070 performance :)

It could be worth it, if you can actually buy an RTX 3060 FE. Isn't this the card that gets hunted by GPU miners and bots?

How long were these cards available for at the last FE drop?

I'd say the best thing to do would be to either get a RTX 3060 TI FE, or the RTX 3060 pre-order from Overclockers.

Interesting metrics Thanks,

I was thinking about going team red for better linux experience. The 6700XT would be similar to the 5700 being a refresh should wouldn't be too bad, once the price starts to fall.
