Cornwall is a great place to grow up, at least it was for me.
Truro is nice, but pricey (maybe that’s not an issue for you).
While it is relatively central, it also means you have to drive to get to the coast and the roads can be shocking, especially in summer. In fact, even out of season the main roads are bad now.
I used to commute into Truro from Fowey to get to college (we’ll over 10 years ago) and the rush hour through St. Austell and into Truro was bad. I did the same journey a little while ago out of season and out of rush hour and it felt just as congested as it did back then.
In terms of holiday, there’s no escaping the fact that you’re going to have to travel before you can travel — getting a train or driving to Heathrow or Gatwick you’re looking at 4-5 hours without traffic/delays. We always stayed in a hotel near the airport the night before our flight.
I realise I’m making it sound terrible but it’s really not. I believe the benefits outweigh the negatives and I hope to live down that way again at some point.
They're building a lot of houses in Truro these days. Multiple new estates of 400-1000+ houses each. From the double roundabout at Green Lane and heading down Falmouth road, a new estate of 400+ houses on the right.
In Threemilestone area planning permission granted for 1000+ new homes (actually think it's more like 1,300+). However developers are increasingly reluctant to actually build up there without the council footing some of the bill (they know they've got the council by the balls because central govt want the houses built desperately).
Meanwhile the roads are already showing their age and unsuitability to cope with extra traffic. I dread to think what state Truro is going to be in in the next decade or so, wrt traffic.
The best thing about Truro is that it has the benefits of a small city, whilst being small enough that 10 mins in any direction gets you out into the countryside. But Truro is not the stereotypical Cornish idyll (that being something like a small fishing village). Truro likes to think it's a small version of Bristol or Plymouth or something
