Hey all,

Sadly the 3 year lease on my golf gti has come to an end and I'm thinking of spending around 12-15k on something a little faster and sportier. Ideally a car that will appreciate with mileage under 60k. I've been looking at Z4's or if my budget can stretch a z4m, although they're pretty expensive. I'm not mega keen on an S2000 or mx5, but I know they're likely to appreciate. What would you guys get?

Also, I work fully remote, so no excessive mileage.

Thanks,

Not sure the Z4 will appreciate as it's quite common, kinda ugly and nothing that special about it. The Z3m is because of the rarity and it has the older and better looking BMW shape. The S2000 is better tbh.

Hi OP,

For that budget a Z4 35is is your best bet as a luxury cruiser if that is what you are looking for. The Z4M is much more of a sports car in its handling / harshness compared to the GT nature of the 35is. When tuned the Z4 35is is absolutely savage, it has a lovely engine and exhaust note. The DCT is fab (same Getrag box as the M3 / M4 afaik). Anyhow a 35is with its N54 will make 440bhp easily with a few bolt ons and a tune (MHD) which can be done via your android or IOS phone. Past this the engine can handle circa 650bhp comfortably on stock internals, and the tuning community for this platform is massive. If you want to know anything further about these cars feel free to ask.

Source: I have had 3

Edit: No comment on appreciation, would likely be offset by the bills from repairing older sports cars anyway. If your looking at older cars the deprecation should be slow anyhow.

Don’t buy a car expecting it to appreciate at this budget as you’ll most likely end up disappointed. Minimal depreciation is what you should be aiming for. I would suggest that a Z4 is the wrong place to start if you’re after an appreciating modern classic unless (at a stretch) you’re going for the M.

What you will definitely get for your budget is something faster than a GTI!

There are some cars for that price which are going up. But it's going to be a 15-20+ year old classic and not really the sort of thing most people want to use all year round (though some people do it).

What about another GTi and a remap/performance upgrade?

I doubt any car in your budget is likely to return any kind of appreciation and be a daily driver, as Nasher has said.

Thanks for all your advice, i've spent the past few months looking around and finally found my new motor.

It's not another GTI, but it's definitely prettier! I Picked up this absolute gem the weekend before last from a private seller, gave her a little clean and polish the weekend. The Montego blue really is stunning!
It's a 2008 manual 3.0 si sport on Eibach springs with a quad exhaust conversion, and the interior is napa champagne leather with Piano black trim, i'm over the moon.

Nice Straight 6 engine on her, which provides enough poke and a lovely sound from the exhausts, only downside i guess is the road tax.
