subnets are no good unless you can prevent the rotuer routing between them. Normal household routers do by default and you can't prevent it.
Which is why i suggested a cheap Enterprise grade router.
As for the hassle of router on a stick.....it's setting a secondary IP address.....it's not hard.
Vlans will workbut again, ony if the router doesn't route between them.
Switches won't support SCLs unless they're managed, if he doesn't know what they are he can't afford to assume that.
either replace the switch or add in a router. Tis the only way to be 100% sure.
