Just moved over to wireless (nooo!) as moved house. In Windows 7 I can see the wireless strength in bars which is all good, but is there a way to see actual information like current connection speed and signal strength? I'm assuming the signal strength is high as all bars are full, but is there a way to see useful info like if its running at full 54mbps?

Click the signal strength icon, then right-click your connection in the list and choose 'status'. That will show you the speed.

To be honest though your throughput depends on a lot of things so it really isn't much use to you.
