For some reason, the option was always there - but now (when i want to use it) linux has "forgotten" my wireless network card exists on my laptop!

lspci lists it, but networking doesn't

i've rebooted umpteen times to no avail, updated hotplug etc etc

    ubuntu on 2.6.10-12 kernel...

Have you tried the killswitch ;)
(Mine has a HW killswitch & is listed with lspci, but don't work unless the switch is on)
