7900 GT is better in the benchies...
Not sure on IQ though, but do you play a game to stand a look at a brick or a fence & admire it?
Only reason i'd go for a X1800 over the 7900 GT is the 512mb may come in handy in about 6 months to a years time!

You have to admit that chain link fences look crap without transparency AA though ;)

(I know it's a mute point with bot the X1800 and 7900 series supporting that but just want to know from a personal viewpoint)

x1800xt 512 is fantastic... no unhappiness with this card. it will run great in games now and the near future.

plus the price is good

you can get 650/1500 with it and the 512memory is an added advantage.

better for AA and AF... ideal all round

ordered the x1800 :)

The x1800xt 256mb flattens the 7900gt.... so well done.

the 512 version more at higher res' and details and the x1900xt(x) even more :p.

The new 7900's almost die when you start to apply aa and af, something x18xx & x19xx cards dont.

They are the fastest cards in games only with aa and af switched off, apply some and the ati comes out on top.

Also, the shimmering problem returns :(, just be aware that if you own a large res screen (20"+) shimmering is very noticable.

No they don't

Show me some benchies with aa and af where the gt wins then, its rather pointless just saying that.
The new beta nvidia drives suffer heavy shimmering problems again.

*edit*

It look slike the 7900GTX struggles against both the 7800GTX512 and the X1900XTX while the 7900GT is the clear winner vs 7800GT/X1800XL ... but not against the X1800XT 256MB for $50 more comes out on top

This benchmark shows the 7900 GT beating the x1900

Yeah and thats just about the only one because that expansion runs better on 7*** hardware.

That also shows the single card solution to be faster than SLI and XFire lol. :p

just looking at the benchies for the x1800 xt and the 7800 gtx and the 7800 gtx wins every benchmark.

The 7900 GT has the same performance as the 7800 GTX so how can the x1800 xt flatten the 7900 GT

I never said it could flatten the 7900GT - just pointing things out. ;)

it can flatten it easily in the bench mark ive seen, another guy has seen a bench mark of the 7800GTX beating the XT, another guy will have seen one where the results are mixed,

bottom line, your an idiot if you base a purchase solely on the strength of a benchmark. wait, see what people say in the reviews, listen to word of mouth reports for image quality, dont just go chuck an extra £80 at a product because 1 benchmark tells you "X" card beats "Y" card by a few lousy frames in a few random situations.

X1800 XT or 7900 GT is what im faced with atm, regarding buying a new card for my nnew build from scratch.

Im going with a X1800 XT 512MB.

1) Will support higher res's when I get a 20.1" widescreen LCD later on. Start off @ 1280x1024 on a 19" crt then LCD afterwards.

2) Cant afford to SLI or CF. No point getting a 7900 GT that can SLI which Im not going to do.

3) Most reviews seem to show that the X1800 XT beats the 7900 GT.

4) Top of the line X1800 XT's are the same price as the standard lowest 7900 GT. The X1800 XT is better value for money.

As you can see the X1800 XT 512MB is the card for me.

In a galaxy far far away
I recently swapped my 7800gt for an X1800XT 256mb (£230), best move EVER!

The x1800xt has far nicer IQ than the nv card, is miles faster (obviously) and has a very powerful stock cooler.

And to all you people talking about the 7800gtx beating x1800xt, since the release of the Cats 6.2, which had a nice little speed boost, X1800 has been miles ahead.

The only thing i preferred about NV were the drivers. The CCC's are the most disgusting things i have ever seen, they are clunky, un-intuitive, slow, resource hogging pigs.

But frankly, that's a price i'm more than happy to pay.
