just tried installing my new x1800xt on a asus a8n-sli, 400W asaka PSU, winnie 3000@2.7, 2gb ram, 3 HDD, audigy 2zs

anyway i put it in, turned on, error message saying power supply or something not connected to graphics card?

its pci-e i thought it didnt need any extra cables...and yes the atx12v cable is connected...on my 6600gt now

surely my PSU can at least handle to boot with the new gfx card? :o

It'll handle it, but you need the 6x pin PCI-E cable plugged into it. :)

EDIT: the adapter should have come with the card.

One of these, 7th down here Akasa PCI Express 6 Pin to 4 Pin Power cable adaptor for PCI-E Graphics Cards (CB-018-AK) .
