Hello fellow 3800 X2 owners!

I've just swapped my single core SD 3700+ for one, so am hoping to get a stable overclock of at least 2.2 so I am not down on clock speed for single threaded apps.

For some reason though I can't even get super pi to complete on both cores at just 2.2... I thought this level OC would be almost a cert.

The symptoms are odd though.

I can complete to 8M on each core fine if I do them one at a time. However, if I run both at once, whichever core I start last fails, while the first confinues fine.

If I swap the afiinity then the same happens but for the opposite core. The error I get is "Not convergent in SQR05".

I've tried upping the CPU voltage to 1.5 to see if that helps, and my memory is using a divider so is only running at 183.3 Mhz.

I'm puzzled by this, if it failed on the same core every time then I'd know that core was weak, but as I can repeatedly get the core of my choosing to fail depending on which order I start them in I wonder if there is something else going on?

EDIT: From reading around other forums based on a Google search it seems people with 100% rock solid overclocks get the exact same problem, and I get the same problem even at stock speeds - my conclusion is that you cannot concurrently run two instances of SuperPi. I shall therefore test each core one at a time. Anyone car to say if this is correct?

You have to make two copies of the SuperPI directory, and then a shortcut from each one to the desktop. Run the concurrently, and you should have success.

yes you can

cpuburnk7x2 is about the hottest you'll get something.

Tried it m8, nothing like a good Gromacs and a Tinker! That was 2-3C lower, still 45C load \o/

253x11, 180 Divider, 231mhz mem, 1.613V, 2-3-3-6.

id run that Bh-5 @ 250 mhz at least(3.3v). with a 10x multil on the cpu and x4 on the HT for some wicked speed. :)

Good ol BH-5 , might get myself two sets of that, anyone used two sets.? what clocks you get with all four dimms in use.?

MSI Neo2 only does 2.85V max on the ram,

i will have to use dividers then :(

Any thoughts about what would be considered an acceptable max full load temp on one of these...

I'm still using the stock HSF so i guess the best way (other than stability) to guage how much speed/volts(within reason) i can apply is to keep an eye on the temp

yea, 60c is the 'safe' max, whist 65c is the limit before any damage, personally id like them lower.

getting around 40c with both cores loaded @ 2.4Ghz, 1.3v (32c idle)

however im using an XP-120, not stock cooler

heres mine so far, dont know if its relevent as its an opteron 165???

pretty early stages as ive only just built the system

Clock - 2626
HTT - 290
RAM FSB - 238
Timings - 3,4,4,8 1t
VCore - 1.4
HT - 3x
Core -? opteron 165
Cooler - lain li exos 2 32idle now(day) last night 36 idle 41 load
Stable - Yes to memtest86 3d mark05 for 45 mins
Mobo - asus premium

im a bit flummoxed tho, my memory is 2x1gb ocz pc4000 gold rated 3.4.4.8@250

the memory simply isnt having it at anything higher than current(238) and if i turn my multi down
etc down as per dfi street guide to see how far my ram will go it wont even go as high as it is now 230 is the max i can boot when the divider is set to 400(1.1) voltage at 2.85 as rated 2.9 makes no difference??? any thoughts

also can anyone tell me how the dividers work on the asus i gather that 400 is 1.1 and i have lowered mine to 333 but i still cant work out how to precaluate what that would equate to via the htt, its just not clicking what 333 etc mean

cheers
Glen

After some "interesting" temps on the stock HSF (was up at 60deg at one point) I bit the bullet and bought a Si-120/Akasa Amber/AS5 combo. Not sure if I got false readings originaly or the HSF "shifted" causing the temps to rocket. Could be the MB Bios update sorted out incorrect temp reporting.

Anyhoo

Fitted this morning and despite a couple of scary moments (had to take the MB out to be able to get my hand under the Si-12o fins to press the mounting clips in) all seems up and running (2 x Prime for 2 hours so far so looks like i'm heading in the right direction)

Updated details:

X2 3800 Toledo (E6)
Abit AV8 (Bios 026)
2400mhz (240 x 10)
2-3-3-7 1T (2gb Corsair 3200C2)
Mem divider 166 (giving 200mhz)
HTT x4
37deg Idle, 48deg full load (both cores)
Thermalright Si-120, Akasa Amber 120mm, AS5 (air)
1.425v core, rest auto

Once everythings settled in and the AS5 has had a chance to take properly i'll see if I can push to 2500, looks like I might just have enough elbow room with the temp to get there.

The advice on OC and this thread in particular has been great and pushed me to do something I wouldn't normally have tried - scary at times but i've a grin like a Cheshire cat now :)

Well i finally got it to overclock again only got it @ 220mhz dont really wanna go any higher i dont play games much i only use it for converting & browsing the net. anyway tell me if these look ok to you for these settings.

i have a Gigabyte m/b so the htt is set on Auto but i upped the voltage to 1.45 for some reason its not showing in the cpuz validation. i have put a cpuz validation up on stock as well.
