I treat mine badly and they work ok. I have trouble with cheap dvdr/cdr but originals seem to go forever :o

Hes right you know, i mean providing its a clean smooth surface, a face down disc could never be damaged, the ring keeps it above the surface, ya learn something new every day. A

lthough one thing i will mention is that with CD-r's (cheapish ones) you are likely to do more damage by laying them printed side down (ie the ' correct ' way) this is beacause on a lot of discs the prinatable surface backs straight onto the written layer/dye layer thus where a scratch on the plastic cover (silver/written side) might obscure a miniscule amount of data from being read or corrected, a scratch to the printed side could remove data entirely and completely ruin the disc.
