NVIDIA Shield Tablets

Built on the same technology as the Nvidia GeForce GTX series of graphics cards, scaled down for the performance tier and energy-efficiency of a handheld gaming platform, the Nvidia Shield is the only dedicated gaming tablet for PC gamers. Delivering performance that’s more than twice as fast as previous generation gaming consoles, the Nvidia Shield allows for a handful of PC games and Android TV compatible titles to be played both on the go and at home.

Utilizing the Android platform allows the Nvidia Shield to function as both a dedicated gaming tablet and a conventional tablet that can be used for social media, internet browsing, video and audio playback, as well as photography and video recording thanks to the inclusion of its built in camera. Featuring support for all Google services available on other tablets, the Shield proves to be feature rich with additional extras. Not only rivalling prior generation gaming consoles in terms of sheer processing power, the Nvidia Shield is also the highest performing tablet on the market,

With a focus on gamers who also require the conventional uses of a standalone tablet, the Nvidia Shield features its own dedicated gaming store, the Shield Hub. This store features a selection of games only available on the Shield platform, which have been solely optimized to take full advantage of the Shield’s hardware. As well as the selection of Shield-specific games which can be played locally, the Shield also features two game-streaming services designed by Nvidia.

Known as Nvidia GameStream, those who own GeForce GTX graphics cards can utilize the power of their desktop gaming PCs to stream their games to the Shield over a Wi-Fi connection. This also means that the same peripherals used on their PCs such as the gamepad, as well as the keyboard and mouse can also be used when streaming to the Shield. This works alongside the Shield’s “Console-Mode” feature which allows the Shield to function as a dedicated gaming console when being plugged in to another display in the house.

Taking design traits from both the PlayStation 4’s Dualshock 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 controllers, the Nvidia Shield also makes use of its own specific controller for those who would prefer a change from the PC’s offerings. Featuring a 4-way directional D-pad with a Face button design to that of the Xbox 360 gamepad, the controller also has symmetrical analog sticks located to the lower section of the controller. The controller also features 2 bumpers and 2 triggers.

Where the Shield controller differs from console gamepads resides in its PC and tablet specific buttons that make use of its unique platform. Utilizing 3 touch screen buttons for Android functionality, a Shield Hub button that launches the store, and a thumb-size trackpad that can used for in-game functions as well as navigation of the tablet’s Android operating system. Ensuring that gamers have sufficient control over media functionality, the gamepad uses a Wi-Fi direct connection, a 3.5mm stereo/headphone jack, volume control and 40 hours battery life through the means of its Micro USB charging port.

As the Nvidia GameStream technology has been designed to elevate PC gaming for those who already own Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, those looking to gain the same experience but do not own a gaming PC are provided with an alternative option – one that provides a wider selection games from the PC platform. Taking advantage of the Nvidia GeForce Now streaming service, owners of a Nvidia Shield tablet can stream the latest games from Nvidia’s cloud gaming technology, which is available through a monthly subscription service.
