No problems here

Previously had a 1TB Hitachi Deskstar as my media drive - but with 1080p media that soon gets filled up, so I added one of these when they first came out, and I've never had any problems yet. It's good and fast and whilst you can hear it when it reads/writes at full speed, under normal use (watching vids/browsing) I don't notice it, even with a very quiet system. If you need masses of storage at a brilliant price these are perfect.

Loud and unreliable

I had 7 of these drives in September 2009. 3 DOA drives. Got 3 replacements 1 DOA in that bunch. Just had another drive die on me and another 2 are on the way out currently.

If you get this drive make sure it was manufactured after December 2009 as all the drives before this I have received have failed or are about to.

In short, overly loud, and fairly average drives. Poor quality control on initial production runs that seems to have improved thank god. Wouldn't by another Hitachi drive again.

Thrashed these in a Thecus n7700 pro on raid 6. Saved by the double redundancy. Maintained 80MB/s over gigerbit ethernet. No great feat for the average drive but good performance for the NAS.

Wouldn't recommend these for your only machine. Buy several cheap 1 gb drives and raid them. In my desktop 3 seagate 1 gb v11 drives maintain 300 MB/s transfer and are totally silent with rock solid stability.

Very very noisy disk access noise in my antec 300 case. It's like my old WD raptor.

Good Deal

Can't go wrong here for the price.

The drives do make fairly loud read/write noises. I have two of these in RAID inside my Synology NAS and they're significantly louder than the two 1TB Samsung Spinpoint HDD's that were in there before.

It doesn't bother me much though and these are a good bargain right now.

great hdd

I think they noise is coming from what is holding they hdds.. as I have dampeners in my case & on its feet. & it is not making noise. happy with it.

Best value 2TB drive

Not quite as fast as WD and Seagate 7200rpm 2TB drives as this is lower platter density, but much better value. You could RAID0 two of these for less than the cost of one of the others, for twice the capacity. No complaints about performance using this as a system drive, and no problem with noise either - I can't hear it inside my P183.

RAID Heaven

Hi. I have 5 of these bad boys in a qnap ts-509 NAS running in a raid 5 array with dual gigabit LAN providing the connection to the pc. Speed wise its slower than internal, but i still average around 55MB/s for writing, 68MB/s read speed. Unlike the previous post i do not have a noise problem. In fact above setup is in my bedroom and on almost 24/7 and does not give me problems, unless im really thrashing the disks with multiple reads and writes. These drives are amazingly low on power (Why i chose them for RAID setup)

Good but Noisy

Decent drive for the price, but noisy as hell like most hitachi drives i've had. I have 2 of these in a Raid 1 array. At night I can hear the things from dowstairs or from in another room
