Product information: 31MU97 31" 4096x2160 IPS True 4K 60Hz Professional WideScreen LED Monitor - Black

When most consumers refer to ‘4K’, they’re actually referring to the UHD (Ultra High Definition) resolution of 3840 x 2160. This is, after all, the most common ‘4K’ resolution. It also maintains the common 16:9 aspect ratio and provides quite an enjoyable experience. The LG 31MU97 features a 4096 x 2160 resolution which is also referred to as ‘Digital Cinema 4K’ due to its use as the dominant 4K resolution by the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives). The monitor features LG’s robust ‘business-like’ stand which offers tilt and height adjustment but can’t be pivoted or swivelled.

This display uses a 31” AH-IPS panel (LM310UH1-SLA1) with a 4096 x 2160 resolution (17:9 aspect ratio) and 60Hz refresh rate. This features a very light matte (‘semi-glossy’) screen surface and is designed to provide accurate and consistent colours in both the sRGB and Adobe RGB colour spaces. It uses a flicker-free (‘Flicker Safe’ – PWM free) GB-LED backlight to provide this wide colour gamut (100% sRGB and over 99% Adobe RGB). The monitor is also factory calibrated for both of these colour spaces and features true 10-bit colour reproduction. It can be user-calibrated with the ‘LG True Color Pro’ software as well. ‘Reader’ modes also feature, which are ‘Low Blue Light’ settings allowing the user to select white point targets such as 3882K, 4300K or 4616K to cut down on the blue light emission.

The monitor features a wide range of ports, including; DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, 2 HDMI ports, 3 USB 3.0 ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The native resolution is supported at 60Hz over DP or MiniDP but only at 30Hz over HDMI. 5W stereo Maxx Audio speakers also feature, which seems to be a favourite on higher-end LGs at the moment. The included stand can be removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA holes.

a good 4k monitor

Good stable flicker free 4K @ 60Hrz through HDMI and Display ports.
I like this monitor and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a 4K monitor.
I use it for Video and Photo works and generally happy with it.
Comes with a good stand.

Only down sides are ...
…sleep mode sometimes doesn't display the picture when the PC is woken.
…soft touch controls are fiddly, I returned an IIyama 4K monitor for the same reason, but this is little better.
Could've been better if couple of USB3 port were on it.
No DVI port
Its not a premium looking, a little less stylish, but I dont care.

Works great with the new Mac Pro

I posted a review on here prior to buying this display to warn people that it was only 50Hz on a Mac Pro. However, with the introduction of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, the display is now fully supported at 60Hz. Ignore any reviews (and even at the time of writing this, the LG website itself). You're no longer restricted to 50Hz on a new Mac Pro, that's old news!

I deliberated over which 4K screen to purchase for use with my Mac Pro (Late 2013). I was encouraged by LG's support specifically for the Mac Pro which is noticeably absent from other manufacturer's displays.

The true 4K width isn't essential for me, but is very nice. I came from a 30 inch display and the height of this screen matches my old 30" so I feel I've gained extra horizontal space and kept the same height.

Any comparisons with my old display end there, however, as the depth of colour offered by the LG and the clarity of text on screen is amazing (I'm running at one of OS X's scaled resolutions).

I ordered from Overclockers at 5pm on a Thursday and was surprised and delighted when it arrived at lunchtime the next day! Wow! That's fast!!

Overall I'm really happy with my purchase and would happily recommend the LG 31MU97 to anyone with a "trash can" Mac Pro looking to go 4K.

Works great with the new Mac Pro

I wrote a review for this monitor on 10 December 2014 saying that it'll only work at 50Hz on a Mac. I'm pleased to report that with the release of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, the LG 31MU97 now works at its full 4096 x 2160 at 60Hz. I bought the monitor from Overclockers and am writing this with the display connected. I'm using Apple's excellent OS X scaling and the display is pin sharp and text is crystal clear. It all worked flawlessly out of the box, so recent OS X improvements appear to have fixed the problems that some people were reporting previously (the USB hub also works fine). No complaints at all, this monitor is working very well with my Mac Pro (Late 2013) and I'm delighted with the purchase!

Great monitor, as with all LG monitors t

This is a display to behold, The color is very stable and uniform across the screen and there is no backlight bleed.

As with all LG monitors this monitor has an extremely greenish/warm tint and looks very "warm" out of the box, I might just be accustomed to "cool" monitors and having a daylight bulb probably doesn't help much but I couldn't use it without putting the green down to 20 (out of 100, default is 50). I thought I might have a faulty unit however my friend who has the same monitor has the exact same "problem". Otherwise this is a great monitor, love the extra resolution.

Wonderful monitor

The screen is absolutely amazing, text is crisp and is an excellent display monitor for photo/video editing. Beats my previous monitors hands down.

Only 50Hz on a Mac

Purchasers note that on a Mac this monitor will only achieve 50Hz. That's likely to be fixed at some point in the future with a driver update, however the official guidelines from both Apple and LG at the moment are that the monitor will run at 50Hz at native resolution. I emailed Overclockers to tell them this so that they could update the product description, but they've chosen to ignore me so I thought I'd add a review instead.

Best Monitor I have ever had, period!

I have had this monitor for just over a week, and all I can say is WOW!
Fast delivery from Overclockers and since plugging in, I still can't get over the sharpness and colours of this monitor.

I like big monitors and had a Dell WFP3008 for many years until it started to play up.
This was a quality monitor and looked and felt like it.
I then dabbled with 144hz and 3D, but found the colours poor, and 3D, was nice (if you like head aches!), but missed the acreage of the 30 in monitor, so made the mistake of getting another Dell, this time the latest WFP3014.
Compared to the 3008, the quality was poor, and quality control was even poorer with dust between the screen and panel, light bleed at the sides, and worst of all, Dell refusing to acknowledge that they have a problem.

I almost got a Dell 4K monitor, but in the end I have this LG.

Well what can I say. The packaging is first class, the build quality is second to none, and it worked straight out of the box.
4K gaming is brilliant, and Skyrim has never looked so beautiful!
I'm actually coping well now with the font still at 100% and not enlarged. I did try 125%, which was about the right size but with Win 7 64, some gadgets won't work with lager fonts, and I soon got use to the smaller font, and now its normal for me.
No need for multiple monitors, as you can have multiple word documents etc. open at the same time, and scaling down for progs that don't like 4096 x 2160, 3560 x 1600 works just as well.

You will need plenty of horse power under the bonnet to run at 4K, but I have 2 x GTX780 classified in SLI which seem to do the job without going into melt down.
I did have to do a complete uninstall and a fresh install of the drivers for the monitor and the GPU's to get 4096 x 2160 @ 60hz, but since then I have not needed to touch them again.

As I said, the build quality is so much better than Dell's, and it has that quality look and feel about it (and the Dell cost a lot more!) which has won me over to LG monitors.

No buttons for adjusting the screen etc, just a little joystick under the front bezel of the monitor (under the LG badge).
I was not sure if I liked this idea, but now find it easier than all those buttons on the side, and the frame looks clean because of it.

In all the games I have tried, I have zero screen tearing, but without HD texture packs, some games look a bit jaggy.
Once the HD packs are installed, the jaw droops again.

Thank you Overclockers for loosing that Dell 4K monitor as this LG is the best bit of kit I have bought for a long time.

Paul
