Welcome to Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality is the next big thing in gaming – but, unlike the 90s, the hype is real.

The world is in love with VR, with headsets launching, graphics cards touting their VR abilities and games being developed for this incredible new form-factor.

Overclockers UK stocks the HTC Vive alongside a full-range of VR-ready PCs, laptops and peripherals – and our Room Scale Experience is a ground-breaking free service where you can try the HTC Vive VR headset to see exactly what the fuss is about.

If you’ve salivated over the latest virtual reality news and you’re ready to take the plunge, then read on – and we’ll make sure you’re prepared.

What is Virtual reality?

Virtual Reality gaming sounds fancy, but it’s a simple concept: a headset contains two screens, with each one projecting an image to the user’s eyes. Each screen displays a different image, which combine to create the illusion of perfect virtual vision – which enables the user to play games as if they were right in the middle of the action.

Dig deeper and there’s a lot more to it. The screens are viewed through lenses that create a proper 3D image by mirroring each screen’s image to your eyes – and gyroscopes, accelerometers and magnetometers track your head’s movements, so the images on the two screens changes to reflect your position.

That’s not all that headsets use for tracking – some use LEDs to provide 360° facial tracking, others deploy infrared lights and some come with sensors that sit in your room. Some come with controllers too for more precise movement.

These incredible peripherals deliver the world’s most immersive games. They add a new dimension to first-person titles like Doom and Overwatch, and make adventure games even more absorbing. Platformers, space exploration titles like Elite:Dangerous and racing games like Dirt Rally benefit from this world-class technology that puts the user in the title like nothing else before.

VR isn’t just great for gaming. It’s used by the army to teach soldiers how to diffuse bombs and by universities to train doctors, and can be used for exploring virtual museums, watching movies and unleashing historical simulations in schools.

THE HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

Any VR headset for PC has to drive two high-resolution panels, so it’s no surprise that a beefy PC is required.

Every headset manufacturer sets out its own minimum hardware requirements, but we’ve set out three different levels to point potential users in the right direction.

The first tier mirrors the minimum requirements set out by HTC and Oculus: you’ll need an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or an AMD Radeon RX 480. The next tier requires a GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD’s barnstorming Radeon R9 Fury Nano, and the top option demands a GeForce GTX 1080 or a Radeon R9 Fury X.

You won’t just need a high-end graphics card - the rest of the PC has to pass muster. To get the best out of virtual reality gaming you’ll need a quad-core processor and at least 8GB of memory - and an SSD too to slash loading times.

THE FUTURE OF VR

VR is the most exciting thing in gaming, and virtual reality news is only going to get better as these platforms mature.

For starters, they’re going to get more accessible as graphics hardware gets cheaper and more powerful – and headsets will also drop in price.

A lower barrier to entry will coincide with better technology throughout. Eye-tracking will enable more precision and better depth of field, screens will increase in resolution, controllers will improve, headsets will get lighter and the options for physical interaction will expand beyond controllers.

VR will continue to enhance gaming – but it’s going to evolve beyond that, too. Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook owns Oculus, and he reckons VR will be the next big computing platform, and “part of daily life for billions of people”.

It’ll be used for watching sports, communicating with friends, playing games and watching movies, virtual travelling, medicine and more.

VR is already changing the world, and it’s only going to continue. We’re sorted – are you ready to take the plunge and buy a VR headset?
