What Does a 120Hz Monitor Mean?
Unlike most monitor improvements, 120Hz hasn’t been developed to enhance colour accuracy or resolution; 120Hz panel technology describes the refresh rate. The refresh rate is the number of times a screen refreshes its image. Until recently the standard was 60Hz. Now, with the introduction of high refresh, 120Hz is the starting point for flat panel monitors. This means the screen can redraw every pixel 120 times per second, providing a smoother display and improved user experience.
Note: refresh rate is not the same as frame rate. The refresh rate is a feature of the monitor display. The frame rate refers to the information being sent to it via the graphics card. Increasing the refresh rate will not improve the frame rate unless the frame rate currently exceeds the refresh rate capacity of the monitor.

One of the main advantages of a higher refresh rate is improved motion resolution. Put simply, this is the perceived crispness of a moving image. When the brain blends frames together to create a moving image, the finer details are often lost, reducing the quality. 120Hz gaming monitors help to combat blurring by providing more information to our brains. This helps them to create a better quality picture faster.
However, each person’s brain is different. That means some people might see a difference in 120Hz monitors, while other might not notice the difference unless they’re using a 140Hz monitor.
This comes down to the difference between refresh rate and the frame rate. The frame is dictated by the system’s graphics card. When this exceeds the refresh rate of the monitor, tearing can occur. This is when half frames appear on the same screen momentarily. Even though they last less than a second, it is a huge distraction, especially for gamers.
To combat this, graphics card manufacturers have developed adaptive options. For example, when using a 60Hz monitor, FreeSync works to cap the frame rate at 60 FPS (Frames Per Second). This helps to smooth out the display and prevent tearing; however, it can lag the system and limit performance. Using a 120Hz gaming monitor effectively eliminates this problem by providing a frame rate of 120 FPS.
The refresh rate of a monitor also affects the input lag. Input lag is the delay between the monitor receiving a signal and it being displayed on the screen. For example, the input of a 60Hz monitor will never go below 16.67ms, since that’s the amount of time it takes to pass from one refresh to the next. By contrast, a 120Hz monitor will cut that time in half to 8.33ms. While this might not seem like a significant amount, it is an important consideration for hardcore gamers who want the graphics to run as smoothly as possible.
