FreeSync 2 HDR Monitors
FreeSync, the HDR Revolution
First off, let's get something out of the way. FreeSync 2 is not a replacement for the original FreeSync technology and both will coexist. The two AMD monitor certifications will operate as individual FreeSync tiers with FreeSync 2 being the premium option having a few additional features, namely HDR. Let's delve straight in and take a look at what Freesync 2 offers over the first iteration of the technology.
HDR: High Dynamic Range
For now, Freesync 2 relies on the Windows 10 HDR implementation to operate but the long term solution is very different. Utilising FreeSync 2's tone mapping technology, the monitor will be able to export specification and calibration data which dramatically simplifies tone mapping. In turn, games can import the data and display exactly what the monitor is capable of displaying. This not only reduces latency but improves overall colour representation, offering “twice the perceptual color space of sRGB for better brightness and contrast.”
FreeSync 2 HDR technology also enables dynamic switching between SDR and HDR content depending on what is displayed on the screen. Whether gaming or viewing compatible video content the experience will be extremely rich and vibrant.
In the meanwhile, if you buy a Freesync 2 certified monitor you at least know it is HDR ready.
LFC: Low Framerate Compensation
Working with adaptive sync, LFC renders and inserts additional frames as required. This ensures perfectly smooth visuals even when used at the maximum refresh rate supported by the monitor.
Low Input Latency
As most of the HDR tone mapping will be done in-game, there will be an overall reduction in latency. Combine this with better processing hardware and you have a highly capable monitor that will improve immersion while reducing latency dramatically.

Refresh Rates, Tearing and Input Lag
Many conventional monitors operate at a fixed refresh rate of either 60Hz, 120Hz or 144Hz. Depending on the game being run and your current specs, your frame rate fluctuates depending on how intensively your graphics card has to work. There are two choices gamers have in this situation, and two problems that can arise from them. Gamers can choose how the graphics card passes frames to the monitor by selecting either "VSync OFF" or "VSync ON". The problems that arise from these options are tearing and input lag. Tearing occurs when the GPU finishes rendering frames and sends them directly to the monitor, even if the monitor has not finished refreshing. Input lag happens when the GPU holds the image until the monitor is ready to display it, thus creating a lag in the imaging.
Enter AMD FreeSync Screens
FreeSync utilises adaptive synchronization technology that supports a dynamic refresh rate and eliminates screen tearing, visual latency, stuttering and input lag. At the heart of the any lag or tearing problem exists a communication issue between the GPU and monitor. FreeSync technology eliminates any choppiness by ensuring that the video display adapts to the framerate of the output device, instead of vice versa. This also allows for a refresh rate of up to 240Hz. Initially developed by AMD, the technology came about as a response to NVIDIA's G-Sync, which uses a PCB module (proprietary NVIDIA hardware) to control the refresh rate. FreeSync monitors, however, use software to control the refresh rate, keeping costs down. In fact, what's amazing about FreeSync is that it is basically "zero-cost" software that ensures smooth gameplay without the need for any proprietary hardware. The only requirements are a monitor that is compatible with DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync, a compatible AMD Radeon GPU with a DisplayPort connection, and a compatible AMD Catalyst graphics driver.
