NVIDIA G-Sync Monitors Explained

What is NVIDIA G-Sync?

G-Sync is a module developed by NVIDIA that permits a dynamic or viable refresh rate. This means that the refresh rate for the screen matches the output of the graphics card being used. This is important because when there is a discrepancy between the two, tearing in the image occurs. Tearing is when the refresh rate is unable to meet the output of the graphics card causing two or more separate frames to appear simultaneously on the screen. This is a common problem for gamers who are using a monitor that doesn’t have G-Sync capabilities.

Prior to G-sync monitors, a module known as V-Sync was the most common way to solve this problem. When V-Sync is turned on tearing is eliminated, however there are several issues associated with its use. V-Sync means that if at any point the graphics card drops in performance, for example, from 60 frames per second to 59, then the monitor will draw two of the same frames in order to compensate, which will appear to the user as a stutter in the image. In addition to this, it also causes lag—meaning that for gamers V-Sync is not an ideal solution when it comes to fast-paced game play.

How does G-Sync Work?

NVIDIA G-Sync works by synchronizing the display refresh rate with the frame per second output rate of the graphics card. Most monitors have a fixed refresh rate; this is normally 60Hz, 120Hz or 140Hz. However, the render rate of most graphics cards fluctuates during use and isn’t always the same as the monitor’s refresh rate, which is what results in tearing. NVIDIA G-Sync connects the graphics card to the monitor, allowing it to adjust automatically. The result is smoother, more fluid images, without any lag—giving you a great gaming experience every time.

System Requirements for a G-Sync Monitor

A G-Sync monitor will not work with every graphics card. In order to benefit from a G-Sync monitor, your system will need a NIVIDIA graphics card. This is because G-Sync is a proprietary solution developed by NVIDIA. The leading graphics card competitor AMD has developed its own solution: FreeSync.
