HD 6970 OC 2048MB Twin Frozr II GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card w/ Nexuiz & Dirt Showdown PC Gam

The ATI Radeon HD 6970 uses a new GPU architecture from AMD which features dual graphics engines in one chip with 24 SIMD engines and a total of 1536 stream processors with 96 texture units, providing massively parallel computing power for graphics and other accelerated applications. Excellent card that dominates

After receiving this monster of a card I was quite surprised that the actual product was slightly different to the one on the display picture. Instead of being the Twin Frozr II it was the R6970 2PM2D2GD5. I might've arched an eyebrow to this but it's still the same component inside, so I installed it into my new desktop and boy was I in for a surprise. After years of playing games such as World of Tanks at a rate of 15fps maximum on my old desktop, this card can can average of 70fps but can also peak itself to a silky smooth 128fps!

So ive been using this card for about a month now, this is the best investment that ive made in a while! got mine to 985/1470 on 1.200v, it plays BF3 on ultra with 50fps and doest go below 35! temps after overclock do not go over 65degrees! what a great card, thinking of getting another one for that price...Great service from OcUK as usual.

OK once problems Sorted

Only 1 DVI-I will work if you have 2 VGA Screens. Only 1 screen which uses the 'old' VGA will come on. (Adapters DO NOT WORK for any other slots).

So i needed to buy a new monitor in order to get it working. Now both screens work.
1 on VGA and one on DVI.

Other than that it's awesome. Great in Crysis 2 and Max Payne 3

Incredible value

This card destroys BF3 on Ultra at 2560x1440 (getting 40-50fps out of the box), what more could you want?

Great value and service as always.

Pain/Confusing for Eyefinity/three scree

Bought one of these a while back and it has remained very reliable (and powerful), pretty faultless generally...

The problem begins when trying to set up eyefinity/three monitors. Listed nowhere obvious are a set of requirements which you may not consider, some of which are:

1. There is only 1 DVI-I slot (meaning you can only use 1 screen which uses the 'old' VGA. (Adapters DO NOT WORK for any other slots).
2. When using three screens, one MUST run from a mini-DP port. (2 DVI and 1 HDMI wont work).
3. When choosing an adapter for the m-DP to HDMI or DVI, it MUST be 'ACTIVE' as opposed to passive.
3a. If your monitor (which isnt VGA) will be running resolutions greater than 1920x1200 though the m-DP, you MUST get an Active adapter which gains power though USB or a mains socket for example. The other more normal 'active' adapters can not go past 1920x1200.

It was a nightmare to sort, but worth it in the end. Bottom line is they need to publicise this more...

i have this in a 2500k system and it plays everything maxed and havent seen temps go above 50 degrees an awesome card indeed.

Cool & Quiet

Nice Card, wasn't expecting it to be so big though, its like the biggest thing ever. Make sure you have a big enough case i had to ~Hack saw my drive bays on my Antec case to fit this beast in but was well worth it. I will be buying another after i grab myself a bigger case

Thoroughly impressed with this card, Run BF3 with everything on the Ultra no problems.
-The card do even with the massive heat sink run a little hotter than I expected in a well ventilated 650D getting up to 75 under load.
-This card is however very well made and simply screams of quality and perfection.
-And know to what this card was designed for, Overclocking, Got mine to 960mhz on 1.25V and barley noticed a change in temps but got around 10-5fps extra in BF3.
Overall a great card, at a great price considering when overclocked it will beat a stock 580 and considering you get 2GbDDR5 is epic!

A Whopper

Purchased few days ago, wow its a big boy! Anyways mine has already gone back, you may have been unlucky like me and got a faulty one (Friday the 13th purchase ;) Overheating on BF3 & then running heaven or 3d mark my temps were hitting 105 degrees with fans at 100% & sounding like my case is lit going to take off! Apart from that when i did play BF3 on ultra it looked Pictures

Really good card, runs games maxed out which is fab.

"OC" service was good, tho I did not get my free game (Dirt 3) which it said it comes with.

Great Upgrade

Running mine at stock 880Mhz, its a fair improvement over my 5850 Twin Frozor and still keeps silent when playing Skyrim @ 1920x1200 with everything set to maximum.

Good card its the non overclocked lightning but with a decent quieter cooler, you need a well ventilated case as this is a non exhaust type cooler.

Very Happy

Very happy with this card, I was going to get two, but no need, one plays Battlefield 3 on ultra with 35-60 fps depending on map and activity. On the board it has the lighting branding, the only thing I can think that this is different from the GENUINE BRANDED lighting is that this comes unclocked, but very easy to clock and works like a charm, very stable and very cool. I replaced 2x 5870 that could not play BF3 on ultra without working overtime and getting very hot, this bad boy after an hour at full load it reads 65c, after you come out of game it very quickly come back to idle temp of 37c, those cooling fans are great, my old card's sounded like a hoover, now cool and no noise... A+++++

Top cards for a top price

I've purchased 2 of these running in crossfire. Have to say these shout quality!! They are large though, but fit fine in my HAF X case! They are very very quite and the fans don't even ramp up when benchmarking.. the heatsinks do a good job of keeping the GPU cool

Jas 2011-12-30

Great Card

It's a great card, can see the difference in power compared to my old 6870.
The only problem is the heat, I hit 45c on average idle and about the 90s under load (BF3).
Mine was a little scratched on the paintwork of the card so obviously these were either the returns or test cards that were sent back.
I have stabily OC'd this card to 960 core and 5.8GHz mem.. only for fun but the stock clocks preform amazingly.

Nick 2011-12-23

I've not treated myself to a new graphics card since my current x1950xtx. The box it came in was big...really big. I though lots of packaging around the card but no the card it's self is a monster. Almost double the size of my old card.

This is going to play everything i throw at it. I can't wait to unleash the beast

Thanks OCUK. Merry Christmas to you

Seeing as there are more of these available I figured I would update my review. I did get mine stable over 1ghz. User error, basically you must disable the overclocking part of the CCC or it messes with Afterburner.

What A Beaut

Hmmm where do I start......OK

1) The card is exactly 31cm NOT about 13 Inches as stated in the other review, Sorry but this might make the difference between buying the card or not..

2) I have a Cooler Master CM-690 II AD case and it just fits in and no more with a squeeze..

3) The card itself has a good solid feel and has sensor ports on it and switches on the board for overclocking.

4) Please bear in mind it needs at least a 650w power supply.. I have a 600w and although it ran windows and basic games, I had to upgrade my power supply because when I ran benchmark tests, my 600w just caved, so I ordered a 1000w power supply

5) The fans are loud but only when benchmarks are run and even then its not that bad. So over all, Id have to give this baby a 5*. Its a tasty price for a videocard but its worth every penny..

Richard Faulkner 2011-10-10

This is an amazing graphics car! it runs all games at max settings at 1920x1080 without high temps. the fan is loud at 100% but so far it has not gone that high without using afterburner to set it that high.

This is a very large card and should be taken into consideration before purchasing. I am using a cooler master haf 912 with the removable HDD cage removed.

I would highly recommend this card especially if you want to overclock it, which i plan to do!

the dogs

Well what can i say this card rocks im playing all games 1900x1200 to the max and im loving it

Watch out tho the msi lightning is big about 13" long so make sure you have a case that it will fit in. It did not fit in my nzxt panzer box so had to get a new case and the corsair Graphite 600T Midi Tower Case done the job with no fuss at all.

The msi lightning runs really really quite as well top card

Choosing For Eyefinity

Not everyone is going have a setup with 3 screens and its very difficult to choose your size screens and gpu. Not many reviews and bencmarks when u try a google. After researching, i opted for 3 22"dell 2209wa and msi lightning 6970. It worked out as i wanted. To play games smoothly on reasonable high settings (higher AA sometimes cause major sluggish scrolling). Im glad it all worked out as i wanted it.
