A Force To Be Reckoned With

I purchased this to replace and retire an Gigabyte HD 7950 3GB WF3 which I also purchased from here, around a year ago.

After spending some time benchmarking and overclocking, I can say that this card is a force to be reckoned with. I haven't seen it go over 55C yet at full load with the most demanding games and benchmark tools such as Ungine's Heaven or Valley benchmarks, where he handles the most extreme settings very well. I didn't want to go too crazy on the overclocking--so with MSI Afterburner (which I've been familiar with for some time), it's currently sitting at 1075MHz on the GPU Core Clock, and 1375MHz on the Memory Clock. I do wish it had more Display ports rather than DVI ports, as this card is currently powering AOC 23" I2369VM IPS monitors.

Ahhhh..let's not forget the Never Settle Forever bundle and a few extra goodies that comes with it, which generally isn't advertised.

All in all, I've been both amazed and overjoyed by this purchase. I managed to get it during a time where it was reasonably priced as a "this week only offer". Money well invested. Now I can throw my old HD 7950 in another rig.

Amazing cards

Just received my second r9 290 and have them both in crossfire, work amazing but do get hot! As a single card maxes out all games on ultra!
Would deffonatly recommend to anyone!

Not as good as advertised

This card was advertised to be able to be able to keep around the 85 degrees mark, it doesn't. it will run at 85-87 degrees on a cold day sure (i bought mine in february) but any time during summer it will reach 94C (the point where the card starts throttling) even if i underclock it back to AMD reference voltage and clock speeds with the fans at 100% and thats with a case side fan giving even more extra airflow directly to the graphics card. it starts thermal throttling after 10 minutes in graphics heavy games at 5760x1080 resolution, at 1920x1080 it will run cool but thats not what this card was made for, it was made for 1440p and above...

It does manage to overclock ok, I have to bump the voltage to +140mV to reach 1150MHz which requires using sapphire trixx instead of msi afterburner (msi were probably right to limit us to +100mV on msi afterburner seeing as the card cant even handle its factory +12mV increase) but i havent been able to make it stay there without throttling, maybe i will be able to in winter with all the fans at 100% and thats with a case that i have 6 fans running at full speed...
Really disapointed with MSI, buying this card has made me start questioning OC3D's trustworthiness because the cooler which tom himself says is a very beefy cooler is just inadequate, better than reference sure, but not enough anyway, get a saphire tri-x, vapour-x or gigabyte windforce instead if you plan to use this card for what it was actually made for. or even better, get a reference card and put a kraken G10 (but dont forget to add VRM heatsinks too, the VRM can reach 95C even with a heatsink on them and although thats safe i wouldnt like to try my chances seeing how much hotter they go with no heatsinks such as is common with kraken g10 users).

On the good sides though, the R9 290 is a beastly card, it handles 5760x1080 very well, i even had farcry 3 on 5760x1080 with all settings maxed out, even antialiasing and it would play absolutely smoothly, get the right version of this card that can handle a 1150MHz overclock and im sure even farcry 4 will run smooth at max :D

Fast - Cool - Silent

Great solution of a high end gaming rig.

Runs BF4 Max 1080p with stable 80 FPS.
Temps never go above 75 C
It relatively silent
Cheap for the performance you get.
Has a backplate, looks sexy!
Mild Overclock.

The only bad characteristic is psychical. When you try to remove the two 8 pin connectors it very hard due to the fact that MSI did not leave much space between the heatsink and the pin connectors. Non the less, you can remove them with a small object like a plastic knife.

My test rig:
i7 2600K @5.0GHz 1.42 v
16GB G.Skill 1866 Mhz
700W PSU
250 SSD 840 Samsung
And this Beast! :)

Great card

I wasn't going to buy this card, I was going to buy either a GTX 770 or R9 280x, but now I am so glad I did. It rips through the games my old PC was starting to struggle with, Thief especially, and stays at a decent temp when under stress.

Running Valley & 3dmark the temp, at stock, is in the low 70's and the fans ramp up to between 30-40% with barely any noticeable noise increase over the quiet 18% they sit at when idle.

I may not even bother overclocking since it runs this well out of the box.

Mine has the Hynix memory so not got the unlockable shaders.

I bought this to put in my basic build with an i5 760 and it does what I wanted it to. It rapes BF4 on ultra settings but then you'd expect that for

What a Superb GPU

The cooler on this card is simply stunning keeps very quite even at 100% fan, I bought two and both clock very well and keep cool doing so.

Crossfire Temp - Make sure you have good enough space between them or the top card will be a good 15c hotter than the bottom card.

Best Bang for Buck

I've now had this card for almost 3 weeks and I've got to say I'm very very happy with it.
Playing at 1080p this card is eating everything thrown at it and while playing BF4 the settings automatically detect ULTRA for everything.
While under full load the card stays between 65c and the maximum 80c but that was with the fan setting at 50% and with an overclock on it.
Did I also say it's near silent when under full load?
The only con I have is that when you are overclocking this card it can be throttled, this is easily resolved by setting a custom fan profile in MSI Afterburner, which is also provided with this card.

Fantastic card

Bought this card to replace the Hd5970 I had installed on theTitan viper I got from overclockers back in may 2010.Cards have upped in power since then &the 4gb memory seems to work
Fantastic with the i7 930 @4gz, I love it'performance with the latest demanding titles.The 2gb
5970 had served well but couldn't max out &play fluid high fps on nxt gen titles like this fantastic
value highend card.

Awesome card for the money

I have had this graphics card for about a week and I get between 80 and 100 fps in battlefield 4 on full ultra (with a core i5 4440 cpu), occasionally it dips to 70 fps. Thats for both campaign and multiplayer. It keeps between 65 and 70 degrees under full load and the fan is really quiet. Getting about 750 MH/s with bitcoin. I'm really impressed, and once mantle api is released, games should perform even better. I needed to build a new pc though because my last case was too small for high end cards.

Excellent card. So powerful

This card is so powerful. Runs all games at maximum settings and is so much quieter than the reference cooler. Feels heavy and well made. Running in the overclock mode, the GPU reaches 86

Very Good Card

I purchased this card to replace my existing XFX HD7950 partially because I had since purchased a new 1440p monitor and partially because I simply got sick of the XFX cooler, I spent a long time trying to decide between this card an a GTX 780 and although the 780 is a very good card the R9 290 was certainly the right choice and with the upcoming patch for BF4 to add mantle support it could get a whole lot better

Relevant specs:
Intel Core i5 3570K (4.5GHz)
Asus Maximus V Formula
8GB Partiot Viper 3 1600MHz
Corsair AX760
NZXT Switch 810

-The card is quiet even at higher fan speeds
-The card stays relatively cool even with some mild overclocking
-The build quality is superb
-Performance is very good

- Noting major just a few minor things for example the part of the cooler shroud which extends to the bracket is a minor annoyance when installing the card
