AMD Motherboard By Socket and Chipset: AM4 (X370/B350)

The AM4 processor socket serves as the platform for the "Summit Ridge" range of AMD's Ryzen processors, the "Raven Ridge" APUs (Mobile) and "Bristol Ridge" (desktop) as well as the Athlon X4 without iGPU. AM4 motherboards with the advanced chipsets AMD X370 (enthusiast), B350 (mainstream) and A320 (entry level) offer a lot of new features including, for example, an M.2 slot connected to the Ryzen CPU via four PCI-Express 3.0 lanes. This enables extremely high speeds of up to 32 Gbit/s. Furthermore AM4 socket motherboards support the USB 3.1 standard (USB 3.1 Gen 2) which allows maximum speeds of 10 Gbit/s per port.

Motherboard using the AM4 socket allow, when paired with the corresponding Ryzen CPU, energy-efficient DDR4 RAM at speeds of up to 2.666 Megahertz. Furthermore, fast dual-channel kits are supported and overclocking enables some chipsets to reach frequencies of up to 4.200 Megahertz. Some AM4 motherboards also support RAM with Error-Correcting Code (ECC) memory (in non-ECC mode) meaning that this platform is also suitable for professional applications.

The AM4 Motherboard Feature List:

  • PCIe 3.0 x16 slots for high-end gaming graphics cards
  • Type A and Type C USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 slots at 10 Gbit/s
  • M.2 slots with PCIe 3.0 x4 for data transfer rates of up to 32 Gbit/s
  • Dual-channel DDR4 RAM at 2.666 MHz or higher with OC
  • Modern UEFI-BIOS including temperature monitoring

Attention: The current implentation of the I/O configuration may vary depending on the motherboard. The table above conveys only the basic interfaces featured. Further ports are possible via additional controller chips.

Compatibility Note for CPU Coolers Utilising AMD Socket AM4:

Due to the revision in mounting hole distances for the new AM4 socket, CPU coolers with rear mounts will - compared with preceding sockets e.g. AM2(+), AM3(+) or FM2(+) - require AM4-compatible mounting brackets. Please ensure compatibility prior to purchasing. CPU coolers that are attached directly to the retention bracket of the motherboard retain compatibility.

Some manufacturers offers conversion kits for their AM4 CPU- and AiO water coolers. Those who wish to continue using their old CPU cooler with an AM4 motherboard can request a compatible conversion kit directly from the cooler's manufacturer. On presenting proof of purchase one of the aforementioned kits will be dispatched at no cost.
