Get Essential Hardware: Desktop Computers

Overclockers Desktop Configurator

The desktop PC is an essential piece of hardware. It provides anyone with all the power and speed needed to browse the internet, work from home, or game. Attempting to do the same things on a tablet or smartphone device offers a limited experience by comparison, which is why the unbeatable capabilities of desktop PCs makes them so invaluable. Overclockers UK offers a diverse and attractive range of desktop PCs, tailored to suit all kinds of requirements and lifestyles. Explore our desktop PCs, all built in-house by our team of experts.

A General Overview and History of Desktop PCs

The most conventional makeup of a desktop PC is as follows: a case that houses the necessary hardware, the power supply, motherboard, CPU, memory, and storage. Depending on your usage, a computer will also contain a dedicated graphics card. Additionally, peripherals, such as a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, are a necessity when operating your desktop PC. On our desktop PC configurator, these are all options available to you.

The world's first desktop computer was released in the latter half of the 1960s: the Olivetti Programma 101, also known as Perottina and P101. 1971 saw the creation of more desktop PC designs creating a model programmable in BASIC, which was based on a smaller minicomputer and used read-only memory (ROM). It also featured little single-line LED alphanumeric displays and was able to draw computer graphics with a plotter.

By the end of the 1990s desktop computers had grown in popularity and demand. The most popular were the IBM PC, the Apple Macintosh, and the Commodore Amiga. Desktop PCs from this era were housed within a desktop case - a shell laid out horizontally upon which the display screen sat. This kind of design fell out of favour as the '90s progressed and was eventually replaced by the tower case which could be left on the floor beneath or next to a desk.

What to Consider when You Buy a Desktop PC

There are many things to keep in mind when you start to weigh up your desktop PC options. To start with, you should consider the main user(s). Depending on the needs required will dictate what sort of hardware and computer you will want. For office work, internet browsing, streaming services, a home and media PC will serve you well. For more demanding workloads like gaming and streaming, a fully-fledged gaming PC is the way to go.

Next, you need to consider the hardware – how powerful does it need to be? How future-proofed do you want your computer? Whether you’re a casual or enthusiast gamer, having a dedicated graphics card is a must, to ensure your gaming is a fun, enriched experience, rather than one tainted by lag and stuttering. A storage drive with a high capacity is paramount. Traditional hard drives tend to have more space and lower price tag, whereas solid state drives (SSDs) are incredibly fast.

Finally, you need to consider your desktop PC’s footprint. Cases and hardware come in a range of sizes, allowing all to build a computer, even when space is limited. Additionally, many PC cases come equipped with ample ventilation to help maintain operating temperatures, regardless of size.
