Product information

"Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X OC 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11226-11-40G) **OcUK Worl"

OcUK has a worldwide exclusive on the only 8GB 290X in existence, but this is not any 290X it's a highly fine tuned machine being the Vapor-X edition with near silent cooling solution. Running with a 1060MHz core clock and with memory clocked at 5600MHz makes this card absolutely perfect for a 4K setup, even more so with a pair or three of these in Crossfire. That means you could play games like Skyrim with expansion packs at 4k resolution and still not run out of VRAM.

Based on the award-winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture from AMD with 2816 Stream Processors, the SAPPHIRE R9 290X Vapor-X is an Overclocked edition which boasts 8GB of the latest GDDR5 memory running at 1400 MHz (5.60GB/s effective) and high speed engine clocks of 1060MHz.

SAPPHIRE’s innovative Vapor-X cooling technology allows products to run not only cooler but also much quieter. A Vapor-X product means a virtually silent gaming experience and more headroom to explore performance tweaking!

Choke is an important component of the graphics card. By working with the component engineer, Sapphire’s patent pending choke is 10% cooler and offers 25% more power efficiency than a normal choke. The graphics card will be more reliable and save energy.

Improved reliability and better overclocking are possible by using only high-polymer, aluminum capacitors which posses far superior characteristics than regular aluminum capacitor for a longer product life. When operational temperatures drop by 20°C, the product life span is extended by a factor of ten, when the operational temperature increases by 20°C, the product life span only decreases by 10%.

Along the edge of the card the PCB is extended and one of the copper layers left exposed. An additional heatsink mounted directly to this copper layer allows heat absorbed into the PCB from the GPU and other components to be transferred to the heatsink and cooled by the airflow. This feature alone can reduce core temperature by 2 degree C.

Crossfire comparison.

I'm the one who posted the benchmarks I got above, added a 2nd one of these 2 months back and thought I'd show the new figures.

Build.
Asus Sabretooth Rev 2 Mobo
AMD 9590 @ 5GHz with Corsair H105 Hybrid CPU Cooler
16GB 2133MHz DDR3
3, AOC e2343F monitors.
With 1 card I got these results

3DMark11 scores the rig as P13161
3Dmark, as follows,
Ice Storm 121892
Cloud Gate 24122
Sky Diver 26091
Fire Strike 9145

Better than 89% of all PC's tested including SLI and Xfire rigs.

with the 2nd card it gets this,

3DMark11 scores the rig as P14905
3Dmark, as follows,
Ice Storm 137166 + 15274
Cloud Gate 25583 + 1461
Sky Diver 32350 + 6259
Fire Strike 12716 + 3571

Now showing as better than 98% of PC's tested, Job done.....

me a fan because...

they are easy to install, great quality and a good price. so now I can play all my games at ultra, and it doesn't get hot attall, it never goes above 25deg C.

Sapphire R9 290X in CrossFire at 4K revi

I've always wanted a 290X from the day they were released. I've always been a fan of team red and I have no intention of switching sides.

When I was building my parts list for my new rig I had playing games at 4K resolution in mind. That needs a lot of graphical horsepower to run and the Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X (or rather two!) delivers! With maxed out graphics settings I get a solid 60 FPS (because at the time of writing 4K is limited to 60) on all but the most demanding of games (I'm looking at you, Crysis 3).

I'm very pleased with the performance and the ability to run in CrossFire without a bridge makes my case look even cleaner. I especially love the custom Sapphire logo on the side that changes colour along with the temperature and the Vapor-X backplate just looks fantastic.

The only issue I have with them is that under full load (pretty much any game on ultra at 4K will do this) they get fairly hot and the fans running at near 100% are particularly noisy. Not so much of a problem if you have headphones or simply turn the volume up!

The hottest I've had these cards running is 83 degrees C running OCCT on a maximum GPU stress test for 3 hours (at 4K, obviously) . That might seem like a pretty high temperature but it's considerably cooler than many other 290X designs!

Overall I'm very happy with the performance and I didn't buy two beastly graphics cards expecting them to be quiet either so bear that in mind.

Very Pleased

This was purchased to beef up my AMD PC - 8320 4ghz, 16gb 1800mhz, SSD etc. It certainly made a difference in the numbers - close (within no more than 20%) to my I7 4820K @ 3.9ghz, 16gb 1600mhz 780Ti. It is a big card so to get the best performance cooling put it in a big case. Aesthtically it's a perfect match for a blue theme (bought an HX850i at the same time and it's a perfect fit) - also the alluminated logo is a nice idea.

I know I could have bough a faster card for the money, however I couldn't resist keeping my AMD based build consistent. I am sure it would be quicker on the I7 (but that's red).

best card I have ever owned

This card is stunning in aesthetics and performance. It runs cool and silent with the ability to overclock really well. I upgraded to this card from 2x gforce GTX 660 in sli as I wanted mantle and true audio, to say I'm impressed with both would be an understatement. Looking forward to see what comes to the table with the next series of cards.

Very Nice

Awesome card, has no problem running anything that I throw at it.
Easy to install and solid feel to it.
I have yet to see mine go red.

However, my dad bought the same card today and his is going between red and yellow playing Shadow of Mordor on full Ultra settings with a pretty high resolution.
I believe this may in part be due to an issue of airflow around his machine as it seems to always get pretty hot in there.

Anyway, great card. Recommended to anyone

Monstrous card, quiet and cool with it

Bought one of these in May to go with this lot.

Asus Sabretooth Rev 2 Mobo
AMD 9590 @ 5GHz with Corsair H105 Hybrid CPU Cooler
16GB 2133MHz DDR3
3, AOC e2343F monitors.

With that setup I was able to make this vid of Grid Autosport using Fraps to record it and Movavi to convert it for youtube. It looks closer to what I see if you run it @ 1440 instead of 1080 but might look bad for the 1st few seconds.

http://youtu.be/brBikq_j-NM?list=UUfodQroh1MfPmXtSWtBjvcg

Running the games Benchmark at the same settings (all maxxed out bar AA & AF down a notch each and crowd turned off), giving figures of 67 fps minimum, 81 fps average and 102 fps maximum. Bear in mind thats at 5912 x 1080 bezel corrected as well!

3DMark11 scores the rig as P13161
3Dmark, as follows,
Ice Storm 121892
Cloud Gate 24122
Sky Diver 26091
Fire Strike 9145

Better than 89% of all PC's tested including SLI and Xfire rigs.

As for noise it's quiet as a desk fan even under full load and I can't hear it over the H105 fans when it's at idle.

Nice final touch is the logo lighting up blue at idle then changing to yellow under load, it'll go red (apparently) if you overdo it but I aint seen it do that yet even in Crysis 3!

Awesome!

Have two of these bad boys in CrossfireX and I am truly amazed with their performance. I play alot of FPS's more so BF4. I run the game on Ultra + Full AA etc and the average FPS is around 160 mark on DX11 not even tried mantle yet. The Master of the two reaches highs of around 70 - 75 Degrees Celsius although my cooling is pretty epic. The issue is not the GPU's fans being adequate enough to cool themselves the Vapor-X cooler is more than adequate! The issue is getting the hot air out of your case. The Intelligent Fan Control is a "Cool" feature but to be honest ive turned it off and I personally cannot hear a difference in noise and lets be honest when you have a headset on you cant hear your rig anyhows!

Cool and Quiet

Fantastic card, looks great, and has the performance to match. Run nice and cool even after hours of gaming, it will sit at a steady 60-65 degrees, the best thing is how quiet it is, ive had a 7970 vapor-x before and you could here the fans spooling up, with this card you cannot, its very quiet. I was impressed to with how the center fan is the only working fan until under load the others kick in. also the sapphire logo glows blue on idol, then under load turns yellow, if you get it hot then it glows red, but im yet to see this.

amazing

Runs cool and quiet hits as high as 70 degrees not 95 like the stock cooler, expensive but worth it for 8gb vram.
