Efficient CPU cooling with the Scythe Mugen 5 ARGB Plus
In contrast to its predecessor, the Mugen 5 has a slightly changed design. Thanks to the six inclined heat pipes, the asymmetrically arranged heat sink does not sit directly above the base plate and thus allows unrestricted access to the memory banks, which can therefore also accommodate protruding memory bars with large heat sinks. The contact points of the six heat pipes were sensibly distributed on the large aluminum heat sink and, with a total of twelve risers, ensure a high heat transfer capacity.

There is a plastic cover on the top of the tower cooler with the manufacturer's logo and RGB LED lighting. The other design details correspond to the usual Scythe cooler range: the fins are therefore made of aluminum, while the base is made of copper and protected with a nickel layer. The scope of delivery includes two 120 mm fans of the type Kaze Flex A-RGB PWM 120 , which work in a push-pull configuration.

The illuminated PWM fans from the Kaze Flex series from Scythe offer a very wide control range from 300 to 1,500 rpm . This makes the Scythe Mugen 5 ARGB PlusEquipped for every purpose from ultra-silent to overclocking, after all it generates just 4 dB (A) at minimum speed and in return transports a whopping 112.93 m³ / h of air at maximum speed. In addition, the two fans are equipped with digitally addressable RGB LED lighting, which can be connected to the mainboard via a 3-pin RGB connection (5 V) and with ASUS Aura Sync, MSI Mystic Light Sync, among others. Gigabyte RGB Fusion and ASRock Polychrome Sync is compatible.

The mounting kit offers extensive compatibility with AMD and Intel sockets . In addition, with its sturdy screw connection, it guarantees a secure fit of the cooler even during transport. Thermal paste and installation instructions are also included.

SCYTHE INCAPABLE OF MAKING A FAN + NO SUPPORT

by Rich star_border star_border star_border star_border star

I brought this cooler for a recent build. The cooler itself is great, good quality, good mounting kit and straight forward to install but sadly that is where the good bits end. One of the fans included didn't always spin when computer was turned on, even if PWM is @ 100%. I didn't want to tear down the entire build to RMA the entire cooler for a fan, so I contacted Scythe since the 1500 RPM fans that come with it are not available on their own. Scythe totally ignored the request. So I brought 3 (2+1) Scythe Kaze Flex 1800RPM fans elsewhere to get my build working. 2 out of the 3 fans were totally broken, flat out didn't spin unless finger-started. After that they would wobble around a stupid amount. The third would spin and not wobble but only after a while. I sent all 3 back to the retailer. I then brought two Noctua fans to attach to the Scythe cooler and of course they both work perfectly each and every time with no wobble at all. Sadly after all the messing about with fans the wire fan clips that came with the cooler have already started to stretch and lose tension. I contacted Scythe again to ask for them to be replaced given the hassle this cooler has given me to try and get things nice and tight again - no response. So I have no other choice but to spread the word as far and wide as possible: avoid Scythe. No quality, no support. Stick to non-meme companies like Noctua and Be Quiet!

Fantastic cooler, fiddly to install but great instructions

I bought this based on using Scythe coolers way back in my Pentium D days (I recall it being the Katana?). Anyway, it was relatively cheap mid-range and performed well. Scythe came back on my radar to find a reasonably priced CPU cooler for my new AMD setup, that could perform on both mid and high end CPU's from the maker. This Mugen came up again and again. I went for the ARGB version as I wanted to do some proper RGB (a red theme for all-red maker - AMD Ryzen CPU and RX5700XT GPU). The packaging is great, everything (I mean EVERYTHING) you need is in there - although I use my own preferred CPU thermal paste, but there's nothing else required. The unit is BIG, but also well designed to have good RAM clearance although it's best to check the site for actual measurements. The installation with dual fans, RGB cables and a little controller box was pretty fiddly overall, although actually mounting the adaptors and the cooler was really easy, especially with the amazing screwdriver that became my staple go-to driver for anything in my PC case and build. The hiding of the cabling took ages, which was a downside but worth it in the end because even now I'm still super proud of the aesthetics. In terms of performance, it's amazing. It's way way cooler than stock coolers, and given the size of the unit it's able to pretty much take the air input from the front fans straight into the fin array, and the rear fan will throw the air straight to the exhaust fan. I'll hit around 70-80º max on really intensive stuff (rendering typically) using all cores on a Ryzen 5 3600x maxed out, in part thanks to the dual PWM fans and also my case setup with 140mm case fans keeping the air moving swiftly. I've nothing to complain about, but I wish ARGB was a lot easier to deal with in terms of all the fiddly cabling. If/When I get round to upgrading the CPU, this cooler will remain part of my rig for a long time.
