SST-FT05B-W Fortress Tower ATX - Windowed Black

The Fortress FT05 represent SilverStone’s continued dedication in improving and reinventing computer chassis design. Similar to the RAVEN RV05, it no longer has any 5.25” drive bay and utilizes SilverStone’s fame 90 degree rotated design. Previous full ATX SilverStone chassis with 90 degree layout often had to compromise on space efficiency due to fixed length of the motherboard in rotated orientation. So the elimination of 5.25” bays solves this issue naturally and enables FT05 to be not only more balanced in proportion but stunning in its design thanks to its thick wrap-around aluminum exterior.

With majority of wasted space eliminated, the FT05 is better optimized for components that affect performance the most such as CPU and GPUs. The result is an expertly-engineered ATX chassis that is just as capable in terms of compute power and heat dissipation as the first RAVEN chassis, the RV01, but in half the size. Equipped with latest revision Air Penetrator fans that include three speed switches and modern touches such as externally removable filters and tool-less panels, the FT05 has everything that PC enthusiasts could wish for in a compact, high performance computer chassis that is not only cool and quiet, but also easy to build and maintain. For those not wanting to constantly step up in chassis size to obtain top-level performance, the Fortress FT05 is perhaps the best and most beautiful solution.

Incredible air cooling but not much flexibility

Air cooling with this case is the best I have experienced from any case I have owned in the last twenty odd years. The combination of a relatively small interior, 90deg rotated motherboard and two huge Air Penetrator fans means that your whole system is basically in a convection assisted wind tunnel.
The fans have three speed settings, the lowest is 650-700rpm and is essentially silent, the highest is around 1200rpm and is quite loud but provides awesome cooling - I actually removed the fan on the cpu cooler on this setting and the temps were basically the same, that's how much airflow there is. The middle setting is ideal for day to day use with just a faint noise, mostly air movement, and excellent cooling.
The speed control switches for the fans are the ones which come with the AP181 fans and the same as other Silverstone cases like FT02 so the fans still need plugging into motherboard headers. I had to plug them both into one header via a splitter which worked fine but the current was just under 900mA with the fans at full speed which is about as much as you can safely draw from one fan header.
I messed around with water cooling this case and to be honest it's a waste of time, the case just isn't designed for it.
You can use a 120mm AIO for the CPU but the temps are not really much better than air cooling as the rad just restricts airflow in that part of the case. I'm using a Noctua D14 which fits nicely, the D15 does fit (just) but pushes against the side panel a little.
Speaking of the side panels these are NOT aluminium as I was expecting, just plain steel and not a brilliant fit either.
I'm not sure whether this is just poor design or because of the foam layer on the panels but they never quite feel like they've clicked into place. I'm fairly certain that Silverstone designed for alloy panels and then changed their mind.
Also the removable top vent is plastic and feels like it's going to break when you fit or remove it - I'm currently looking at getting an aluminium one machined but it's kinda expensive which is obviously why Silverstone didn't do it in the first place.
Other than that the case construction is totally solid and quite heavy for a case of this size.
Just a quick note on cable routing - I've spent the last 18months building ITX cases and this case is almost as challenging to be honest. There is not a lot of room behind the board and there are several places where cables can be badly pinched by the side panel. A modular PSU with flexible, individually sleeved cables is recommended.
