Simultaneous Dual Band

Two separate wireless networks that will run on either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band, simultaneously. The traditional 2.4GHz band can provides more range and is great for everyday web surfing use but it is more susceptible to interference from wireless devices running on the same frequency. While the 5GHz band can provide faster wireless speeds and avoid much interference .This way, the 5GHz band is just right for bandwidth heavy tasks like on-line gaming and HD streaming. Now you can enjoy both advantages of the two bands by just having one device.

Full Gigabit Ports - More Power to You

With 300Mbps 802.11n wireless and 4 gigabit LAN ports, the TD-W8980 is the ideal choice for bandwidth heavy users that rely on speedy, reliable connections for bandwidth intensive work or entertainment such as lag-free conference calls, HD video streaming or online gaming.

2 USB Sharing Ports - Easy Sharing

Using the TD-W8980’s two multi-functional USB 2.0 ports, users can share printers, files and media either throughout the network at home with several different computers or even away, using the device’s FTP server functions so that you never have to part with your files.

Interchangeable LAN/WAN Port - Versatile Connectivity

The TD-W8980 supports ADSL or Ethernet WAN connections (EWAN) that allow users to have the flexibility of different Internet connections among ADSL, cable or fiber modem using its interchangeable LAN/WAN port. This unique feature makes it easier when users need to change to fiber or cable services when necessary.

IPv6 Ready

This device supports IPv6, which is foundational to the next generation Internet and enables a range of new services and improved user experiences.

Virtually Impregnable-10 VPN IPsec tunnels

You'll pay twice as much for the feature

I purchased this router two weeks ago to replace my existing ADSL router that over three years had started to get very erratic with wi-fi. My Nexus 4 and Chromebook etc, were struggling to connect and it was just getting worse. I think the wi-fi card in it had cooked itself over time.

However, how to you replace a Draytek 2710Vn? That is a tough act to follow.

I need not have worried this router fills the gap and then some. Sure it doesn't have all the many many settings that the Draytek does but to be honest I had no use for 70% of them. I just like proper routers and not freebie ISP toys.

I flashed the latest firmware as step one. Setting it up was fairly straightforward though some standard settings are hidden away strangely so keep an eye out for further drop down lists. I have setup my wifi as two separate networks rather than one collective. Basically separate 2.4 and 5Ghz networks. So all my new gear works on the 5Ghz and legacy stuff can run on the older type. I have to say living in a city centre having 5Ghz all to myself is a blessing, enjoy it while it lasts.

Download speeds etc. are all comparable to the Draytek. I don't really use the gigabit switch in it as all my gear runs off a larger gigabit switch which then connects to the router. Nice to have though.

I just hope it lasts a bit longer than the Draytek did but I always say if you get four years from a router it's done well.

TP-Link N600 (TD-W8980)

One of the problems with routers is the fact that the retail packaging has little resemblance to the features you will get. having had enough of netgear and Linksys recent offerings which have been less than great.
Took a chance on this model and it has plenty of options for those of us who want them, but similarly you want smooth asdl performance.
where the Linksys x3000 felt featureless and choked on simultaneous youtube and internet streaming radio- the tp link had no problems
