Radeon R9 390 "DD Black Edition" 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (R9-390P-8DB6)

AMD Radeon R9 390 and above are VR Ready, virtual reality headsets such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are game changers in the way we play games. Valves SteamVR benchmark is the best way to test if your current PC is VR ready, ideally you need a score of 7+ and a 390/390X tend to score 7-8 which means they meet the minimum specification for virtual reality. VR will change how we play games as titles such as Elite Dangerous are out of this world when experienced in VR and with upcoming titles such as Portal 3, Half Life 3, Doom the future looks very exciting for PC gaming and AMD is ready with Liquid VR.

The 390 series from AMD offer great future proofing for upcoming game titles such as Star Wars Battlefront, DOOM, Half Life 3 and Fall Out 4. Featuring DirectX 12 support and 8GB of memory makes the 390 series great for current and future games at resolutions upto 4k.

The AMD R9 390 8GB features the latest GCN (graphics core next) architecture from AMD with 2560 stream processing units and an enhanced engine clock of up to 1050Mhz. It is equipped with 8GB of the latest high performance GDDR5 memory on a 512-bit interface and now clocked at 1500 MHz (6GHz effective) delivering higher bandwidth than earlier models.

mind the size before buying

an amazing card overall, not too loud on stock fan settings even after slight overclocking and doesnt heat up too much either. huge improvement in all games after replacing an old gtx 670. the only minor problem i had was fitting it in my case, which being the mid tower zalman z9 i though will be easier. had to rearrange my cable management to make it fit, but once it sat inside it does wonders. i would actually consider getting another one for crossfire but my psu wouldnt handle it :D all in all, a really great card, very happy with it. and the usual bag of haribo from OCUK :)

Crossfire Review

Crossfire performance is amazing on stock clock, but watch out for overheating if you try to OC or increase volts. I get both cards to around 72-75c after 30 mins or so of BF4, with fans at 100% which makes a racket!
Although 8GB VRAM seems too much, I have seen 4.5GB used in BF4, and 5+GB in FC4 max settings @ 1440p freesync
Oh, and make sure your PSU is up to the job!

Bang for buck

Monster of a card sleek and simple in design
Especially coming from a R9280
Lots of Vram to play with
Not even touched any clock speed just adjusted fan speed to 40%

After 6hours of war thunder at 2560x1440 ultra I was at a solid 90fps
Max Temps of 71°c
Average of 67.6°c
Paired with AMD 8350 at stock
In corsair 540 air

Although in design it will be hard to detached the pcie power cables as the fun array extrudes over the clips that hold them in place

But other than that 10/10

Nice sleek looking card its well constructed with a nice solid backplate. this card has maxed out everything i've thrown at it , no coil whine at all, its cool and quiet too. Under full load for a few hours i get 72 degrees max temp which i think is good for such a powerful card , if you buy this card you wont be disappointed.
Paired with 6600k running stock speeds on both
80-130+fps BF4,
90-100+fps Rust
45-70+fps DayZ
70-100+fps Rainbow Six Siege

Great card at a bargain price

The card is by far the best card i have used in a while. It's a huge upgrade from my gtx 760 i had previously and i am now able to easily max out every game at 1920x1080 (including notoriously difficult to run games i.e. Witcher 3, Crysis and AC: syndicate).

Temperatures are also surprisingly good considering how common it is to hear of AMD cards running at high temperatures. At idle the card sits at around 30 degrees with the fans running at less than 10%, when under full load for extensive periods of time the card also rarely exceeds 70 degrees giving it a large amount of headroom for overclocks.

Overclocking ability is relatively good allowing me to get the card to just under 1200MHz on the core and 1650MHz x4 on the memory.

Overall it is a brilliant card and well worth the £250 price tag, especially how it can keep up with Nvidia cards charging around double the price of the r9 390.

Good card at a good price

This card is a real beast with 8gigs of RAM and it's factory overclocked too! Just one word of warning though. The backplate gets very hot (not the card itself, monitor the temps and you'll be very happy). The card runs fairly cool but the backplate puts out a lot of heat so you do need a good sized, well ventilated system. Star Wars Battlefront auto detected and set all to Ultra, so I can't complain about that. So....8 out of 10 'cos of that really hot backplate!
