Monster fans, rise up! Adore is a creature-collecting and team-building adventure that sets out to answer the question; “but what if instead of being inspired by the late 90’s tech boom, Digimon drew its style from cottage-core fantasy?” If you’re still a diehard Digimon and/or Pokemon fan this late in the day like I am, then this one is for you!
What is Adore About?
You play as Lukha, a young boy who discovers that Draknar, the God of Creatures who created all things, is hiding out in your body. That is after his son and nemesis Ixer swoops in to kill him. Thankfully being possessed by god acts like a vaccine for death, and Draknar tasks you with getting back the Divine Essence his lad stole to prove yourself a true adorer of the God of Creatures
Playing as an Adorer, players travel the land and capture creatures as you go. There are 39 to find in total, each with stats, attacks, and special abilities as well as types like physical to make them feel unique. As you explore, you will be attacked by hostile creatures – in moments that gave us violent Pokemon Legends Arceus flashbacks – and need to use your staff to capture new allies. These furry friends can then be called out on the fly to help defend you. You can’t just capture everyone you see however – you’ve got to save up Particles to be able to ensnare more creatures. This helps keep gameplay balanced as you build up to taking on more powerful foes and overwhelming odds.
Of course, any good monster collecting game is sure to make you feel attached to your little pack of furry critters. Adore doesn’t pull punches here, as your lives literally depend on one another! When one of your creatures loses all their health and gets fatally damaged, the player’s health will be drained to keep them from dying until you can heal.
Our Thoughts on Adore
There’s an easy pun about how much I adore this game but Adore is indeed a true delight. The watercolour visuals and earthy pallet make it as relaxing to watch as the score is to listen to. The camera angle and controls are reminiscent of real-time strategy games, granting a certain detachment from the action that helps this pervading sense of calm as I play. But, like a good farming sim, this only compels me into a comfy marathon of gaming.
