Best D&D Games to Play After Seeing Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves 

The much-hyped Dungeons and Dragons film has finally hit the big screens and it’s got us excited to relive all our favourite Forgotten Realms adventures all over again.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves has made us adore this franchise more than we thought possible. From Holga’s love of potatoes to wild shaping into owlbears, this film has hit all the right notes. Which just makes us want to crack out our click clack math rocks, dust off the character sheets, and start a whole new adventure. My Water Genasi, Swish, shall live again! If you’re anything like me, though, the weekly D&D game session just isn’t enough. So, we’ve whipped around the office to find out what D&D PC games everyone will be booting up. 

Baldur’s Gate 3 

The Baldur’s Gate Series is a classic among RPGs. Set in the familiar location of the Sword Coast, there were two main games with expansions and spin-offs. The Dark Alliance spin-off series was a favourite in my household growing up. Baldur’s Gate 3 coming to early access back in 2020 was a welcome addition. 

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an expansive RPG, with multiple classes to choose from and a rich story to follow. Your choices matter as you awaken to find a Mind Flayer parasite has been planted in your brain. As the parasite grows in strength so, too, do you, wielding mysterious and powerful abilities. Do you resist its corruptive call or embrace the darkness?  

The feather in Baldur’s Gate 3’s cap is that it is a next-generation RPG. You have unprecedented freedom to explore a world that interacts with your choices. No two adventures will be the same as the way you play directly influences the cinematic narrative. Plus, the turn-based combat is based on the D&D 5e ruleset, taking initiative, advantage or disadvantage, and roll modifiers into account. Resulting in fluid battles that reward strategy and forethought. 

The best news of all? The official release date is August 31^st.

Staying true to its original fanbase, this game is backwards compatible with any of your old saves, modules, and community mods. As well as being enhanced for crisper and cleaner visuals in regular gameplay, modding tools have seen a massive quality of life improvement, with shaders, filters, textures, and more for creators to explore. 

Plus, the multiplayer system was completely rebuilt to make it easy for you and your friends to play together.

You play as one of four classic D&D characters crafted by fantasy author R.A. Salvatore. Be the mystical Drizzt Do’Urden, strong and pragmatic Catti-brie, barbarian Wulfgar, or fierce Bruenor Battlehammer. Each has their own unique set of skills and weaponry to master, as you try to find the source of evil growing in the Icewind Dales. 

What’s more, this game is chock full of the monsters we all love to see. Beholders, ice giants, dragons – take them all on!

Neverwinter 

Now did this game only make the list because it’s one of my favourites? Possibly. But have I also been waiting patiently for two years for the opportunity to talk about it? Yes. So, shhh. Or I will unleash more egg puns on you. 

Neverwinter is a free-to-play MMORPG that lets you explore many, many famous locations from across the Sword Coast. From the city of Neverwinter to the Underdark, your quests will take you far and wide. There are a whole host of classes and races to play as, each with their own unique skill sets and fighting styles. (My character is a Barbarian because I lack finesse and just want to hit the monsters.) 

In addition to making merry solo adventures, you can join a guild (or create your own!), play as a party, join others in randomised parties to take on legendary-level dungeons, and train up artisans to craft resources. Or just go into a barbarian rage at every given opportunity, like I do.
