Elden Ring was released on the 25th of February 2022, and is a Soulslike experience from the masters of the genre, FromSoftware. This time around they have teamed up with the master of colourful weddings, George R. R. Martin.

What is Elden Ring?

Elden Ring is another entry into the Soulslike subgenre of action role-playing games, made famous by the acclaimed Bloodborne and the Souls series. Like its devilish cousins, this game serves a punishing cocktail of a higher-than-average difficulty, mysterious lore, and combat focused on reading enemy patterns. This has become FromSoftware’s key selling point for their games, as many players come to relish the challenge.

The narrative of Elden Ring is set against a rich backstory developed by George R. R. Martin. Set in the realm of the Lands Between, players take on the role of a Tarnished. Once exiled, you have been summoned back to restore the realm after the titular ring shattered. Its shards, known as Great Runes, have corrupted the many demigod offspring of Queen Marika the Eternal. Your quest is to vanquish the deity’s malcontent offspring, restore the titular Elden Ring, and become the Elden Lord. Oh, and try not to die.

Is Elden Ring a Dark Souls Game?

Even though it’s a Soulslike game developed by FromSoftware, Elden Ring is its own IP in an original world separate from the Dark Souls series. It does however feature similar gameplay elements, much like Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice do. So, you can still expect to find deep character customisation and calculated close-range melee combat that has you juggle skills, magic, abilities, blocking, dodging, and a partridge in a pear tree.

To help keep the formula fresh and exciting, Elden Ring acts as a natural evolution for these gameplay elements. Not only does it carry on the stealth mechanics introduced in Sekiro, but it brings in horseback riding too. This adds strategic new ways for you to approach combat and a mount for you to explore the open world of the Lands Between. That’s right – FromSoftware are leaving the linear behind for you to stumble headfirst into even deadlier encounters.

How Does the Multiplayer Work?

Like previous FromSoftware titles, Elden Ring features an online multiplayer experience. And for many, the chaos that stems from this is a key part of Soulslike’s appeal. This takes the form of a cooperative experience for up to four players and a competitive player-versus-player. Using items found in the bespoke multiplayer menu, players can trigger either of these experiences at any time. These are exclusive to online and don’t support local or offline play.

Summon Allies for Co-operative

You’ll be able to summon other players to aid you on your quest, or join a hosted game. This is similar to multiplayer found in the Souls games. Up to four Tarnished can cooperate in this way, taking on the mighty and demonic foes of the Lands Between together. You’ll have a more limited experience if you’re not the hosting player, but it’s a great way to take a break from a challenging knight encounter. You can also password-protect your game if you’d rather play with friends than random dimensional wanderers.

Invade and Duel in PvP

Some men just want to watch the world burn, and others just want to fight their fellow player rather than aid them. If you fall into the latter category, then Elden Ring has two modes you can do this in you lucky thing! The first lets you directly challenge another player to a duel and engage them in a fight to the death. The second lets you pick someone’s day to ruin, invade their world, and try to kill them. Perfect if you one day wake up and choose violence.

You also have the option to egg another player to invade you. You can also call for help if you find yourself outgunned by the interloper. If you, rather understandably, want to avoid the kinds of people gleefully partaking in this carnage then you can simply opt out of it.

Is Elden Ring a PC Exclusive?

Elden Ring is available to play on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5. While it does not feature crossplay between platforms, it does include cross-gen capabilities for Xbox and PlayStation consoles, allowing gamers on older and newer systems to play together.
