hi, thanks for looking.
ive an old Intel 3820, Gigabyte x79 UD5 motherboard with 32GB pc2400 RAM i think.

need something a little faster. im running mainly music DAW's like cubase but would like to add graphics like 3d which i run easily on my i5 8th gen with 1050 graphics.

Im looking online but its all a bit overwhelming, looking for cheap faster pc update, only motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM needed as all other components have recently been updated like power supply, SSD ect.

anythong in the £500 price range.. can go alittle higher if needed.

suggestions welcome..

thanks in advance

Tony

This would be the base I would work from

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £385.46 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Gives you £125 of your budget left so you will need to add more for a reasonable new graphicas card unless your happy to go second hand.

Like any of these.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £860.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Hope this helps.

could you recommend a motherboard that would allow future upgrades as well...
the more USB connections the better, i have 5 external HDD with years of backup data on.. plus all my music stuff is connected via usb as well...
thanks for all the great help..

Alternatively you could pick up a cheap 6c12t Xeon for around £20 and see a fair uplift from that 3820 without having to go to all the faff, then do a bigger upgrade next year when we have better pricing and availability for new hardware.

To get lots of usb rear ports you would need to step up to an x570 board of about £200+ or alternativly buy a usb add in board or a NAS to hold all your drives in one place.
Yup^

Assuming you can use more than 6c/12t some of those are actually 8c/16t chips.

You can pick most of them up dirt cheap second hand.

Knowing little about xeons are they muliplier locked because some run below 3gig I noticed?

I think the E5's are but I'm not 100%, some Xeon's are unlocked though and make for fantastic cheap OC projects or upgrades to old builds.

The best bang for buck cpu is the 3600 end off. Would a 3700/5700 make a difference?? It depends if you will do anything to utilize those extra cores. From your usage on the original post the answer would seem like no.

The 570x board will only give you more usb/sata/m2/pcie-4 connections over a b450/b550 board I believe unless you spend big.

thats great advice dfour.. appreciated...
music tends to be CPU intensive.. depending on how many plugins, stems etc are being run.. was just thinking bigger is better, but doesnt seem so in the CPU market..

thanks

If you take advantage of the MSI back to school promo you can get a B550 with the 3600 with £36 off so it actually works out at £83 for a slightly better motherboard.
