10 Years of GTA V

2023 marks ten years since the release of everyone’s favourite crime-simulator RPG and multiplayer sandbox game, GTA V. The seventh installment in Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise, GTA V remains incredibly popular to this day.

To mark the game’s 10-year anniversary, we’ve decided to take a closer look at what continues to make GTA V so successful in 2023, along with looking forward to the future of the franchise with rumours and hints continuing to circulate about GTA VI.

GTA V:

In GTA V, choose to play through an in-depth story campaign or go wild in the dedicated GTA Online sandbox mode.

In the story campaign, play as a young street hustler, retired bank robber, and ruthless psychopath, who have all found themselves entangled with the criminal underworld. You’ll need to fend off the power of the U.S. government by successfully completing complex and dangerous heists in order to survive. You can trust no one in the city of Los Santos, especially your fellow criminals.

GTA Online, the dedicated online sandbox, allows you to freely create your own character and story, as you play online with or against your friends. Hone your skills and work to create your own criminal empire as you rise up from a street-level hustler to a powerful kingpin.

Plus, in GTA Online you can also take advantage of the brand-new Career Builder. Here, you can select from four different businesses – Biker, Executive, Nightclub Owner, or Gunrunner. You’ll be able to kick start your chosen enterprise by selecting your property, powerhouse vehicle, and arsenal of weaponry, to ensure you’ve got everything you need to take the streets by storm.

Whatever gameplay mode you decide, you’ll have free reign over the streets of Los Santos and Blaine Country. Commandeer a car, and let your creativity go wild. Whether you’ve got your sights set on claiming that luxury yacht as your own, dreams of flying a plane, or want to test the laws of gravity by simply driving off Mount Chiliad.

Why Is GTA V So Successful?

Whilst the game may have been released ten years ago, GTA V is still a hugely popular and successful game. It continues to draw hundreds of monthly players and viewers on Twitch. But why is the game still so successful in 2023?

Game Within a Game:

One of the huge reasons why GTA V is so successful is that it contains a game within a game. Not only is the action-packed story campaign fully completed with plenty of stories and heists to complete, but so is the secondary multiplayer sandbox – GTA Online. The separate sandbox mode is consistently updated with new content being added for players to explore, reigniting the popularity and interest in the game all over again. The most major recent update was in June of 2023, adding the GTA Online: San Andres Mercenaries content.

Balanced Microtransactions:

Whilst most popular titles struggle with in-game microtransactions, GTA Online offers a balance. Players can choose to opt for microtransactions by purchasing Shark Cards. Any gameplay features that are locked behind any paywalls are minor and aren’t fundamental to the game’s completion. Plus, non-players can all get the same experience regardless, you might just have to grind a little by completing heists and missions.

Modding:

In addition to this, alongside the new content from Rockstar, GTA V features a huge modding community. These mods can range from adding new vehicles and characters, to whole new game modes for players to experience. Any GTA V mods can be used in the single-player story campaign, however, Rockstar Games have made it clear that mods aren’t to be used in the online mode.

Graphics:

Lastly, are the game’s graphics. Released back in 2013, the graphics might not live up to the standards that we see in the latest AAA titles. However, they do excel in providing stability to the gameplay. GTA V features a fantastic balance between realistic graphics and stable FPS, no matter if you are playing at 1080p, 1440p, or even 4K. This is especially the case with new updated support on the latest consoles, including PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X, to feature dedicated graphics and performance modes, such as 4K 60FPS RT.

The Future of the GTA Franchise

Whilst GTA V is still hugely successful and popular, even after 10 years, Rockstar confirmed way back in 2022, that GTA VI is heading our way. There still isn’t a lot of official information about GTA VI, but there has certainly been a fair share of leaks dropping hints at what the game’s map will look like, a new overhauled police AI, and what looks like a modern-day Vice City.

It is likely that GTA VI will be available to play on PC, PlayStation 5, and XBOX Series X/S, given that these are the latest generation of consoles. Any hints as to what the official PC spec is, well we’ve unfortunately just got to keep waiting…
