A wise man once said that no piece of art is ever truly finished until it is put out into the world and even then, it continues to grow as it is now the property of the populace it was created for. If anything exemplifies this better than PC mods, we are yet to see it. No matter how definitive the edition of the game, there’s a talented community just waiting to do everything from touching up textures to enabling Big Head Mode.
We’ve had a whip round the office here at Overclockers UK to learn what mods everyone loves from their favourite PC games. We’ve put the most popular ones together in this list to help you find new ways to experience some beloved titles.
Fallout London (Fallout 4)
While the full version of this isn’t due until 2023, the playable slice we’ve been served so far has us hungry for the whole cake. Fallout London is a complete game in and of itself, built on the foundation of 2015’s Fallout 4. As you might have guessed from the name, this mod moves the action from the USA-set franchise across the Atlantic for the first time ever. The results are phenomenal.
From grenades sealed in cricket balls to palace guard armour, the new assets developed for this PC mod are delightful. Each takes the comically exaggerated brand of national identity Fallout is known for and transplants it to good ol’ Blighty. The 50s nuclear family vibes have been traded for some strong 90s nostalgia, and to be honest that’s more than enough to stamp our ticket for the hype train
Beyond Skyrim – Bruma (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)
It’s like Bethesda games were born to be modded. Skyrim has had more mods than we can count in its ten-plus years. Bethesda even capitalised on this with the Creation Club, premium mods that come with the developers’ stamp of approval. One of the most ambitious projects out there is Beyond Skyrim, which seeks to recreate all of Tamriel within the game.
So far, they have yielded one piece of complete content, Bruma, which is a delightful treat for the Oblivion faithful. This slice of northern Cyrodiil features everything you remember from the previous Elder Scrolls title, including enemy types, items, and landscapes. The architecture of the Imperials is as breathtaking as ever, the region feels truly fresh compared to what the base game has to offer, and the voice acting for NPCs and quests feels top-notch.
The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod (Knights of the Old Republic 2)
Some PC mods exist to enhance the experience of a game. Mods like TSLRCM, as it is often abbreviated to, provide what many feel to be a definitive experience. When released in 2004, Knights of the Old Republic 2 left many story threads still hanging. Not only that, it launched with numerous software bugs that could render it unplayable. Star Wars fans are a passionate bunch, and this fan-volunteer effort rose to address these issues.
You see, they found unused content lying around in the game’s code that developers Obsidian just left there. This was used to create whole new levels of the game with fully integrated audio files and dialogue trees. It also fleshed out the game’s unsatisfying ending (not the last time a Bioware-adjacent title would get that treatment) and of course, fixed the bugs plaguing it. In short, if you’re going to play KOTOR2, you had best be doing it with this mod installed.
Skyrim Together Reborn (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)
Look, we already said Skyrim had too many mods to choose from. So, you know we were never going to leave it at one entry. If playing this game with friends sounds great, but the Elder Scrolls Online doesn’t do it for you, then this PC mod is for you! Released just over a month ago, Skyrim Together Reborn lets up to eight players enjoy Skyrim as one.
The team behind this mod tried to make this dream a reality once before, with the simply titled Skyrim Together. Reborn is built from the ground up, synching every part of the game up between players from chests to audio and subtitled dialogue. There’s even the option to take part in some PvP action if you enable it. By their own admission, it’s not perfect, with crashes and bugs still expected, but it’s well worth trying out for yourself!
The Simpsons (God of War)
When God of War arrived on PC earlier this year, we knew it wouldn’t be long until we saw some fantastic mods developed for it. None of us expected Springfield’s finest father and son duo to take centre stage though. This PC mod, which is not yet available for the general public, was made by Omega Fantasy. In it, Kratos and Artreus are benched in favour of Homer and Bart Simpson.
Not content with just a simple character model swap, Omega Fantasy adds full voice acting for the experience. Not just clips from the show either! Benjamin Rudmar plays Homer, and June Briar voices Bart. Their work is spot on, as is that of Brock Baker as Ned Flanders, who brilliantly stands in for The Stranger. The results are subversive, hilarious, and we cannot wait for the day we get to experience all of God of War in this canon.
Prop Hunt (Garry’s Mod)
Garry’s Mod is not a game. Rather, it is a base title on which gamers can play a whole host of user-generated content. Every game within this game is ostensibly a PC mod. Amongst the thousands of ways for you to play though, our champion is Prop Hunt.
Prop Hunt is hide and seek if everyone playing it was a violent master of disguise. If you are on the seeking side you will have to find other players and kill them. Sounds simple enough. Except you’re not hunting players. Rather, the hiding players will be able to disguise themselves as any of the props that appear on the map. That means you’re hunting for anything from suspicious dumpsters to out-of-place soda cans hopping about. It’s delightful and silly fun that becomes weirdly tense as you try to stifle giggles and giving your genius plan away.
Role Play Servers (Grand Theft Auto Online)
Since its release in 2013, Grand Theft Auto Online has thrived thanks to constant updates and new content drops. It’s part of the reason it’s taken so long for GTA VI to arrive. But for all the adventures we’ve had in Los Santos over the years, haven’t you ever wondered what it would truly be like to live there?
That’s what the GTA Roleplay servers, known as FiveM, seek to do. This particular PC mod sees you take on the role of a character, even having to voice them as you play and go about your day. Its dedication to realism goes as deep as having role-playing police arrest you and sentence you to jail time for breaking traffic laws. That’s immersion we can lose ourselves in for a week or two.
Stardew Valley Expanded (Stardew Valley)
It’s crazy to think that the pixel-art masterpiece that is Stardew Valley is all the work of one man, Eric Barone. It’s even crazier that he’s still providing updates for the game all these years later. Players have a truly ravenous appetite for Stardew content. Barone may not be able to satisfy it all by himself, but he does his best to support the modders cooking up fresh ideas.
One of the most impressive is Stardew Valley Expanded, by FlashShifter. This PC mod is an excellent case of more means more. More locations and characters, a whole new village, additional quests, and plenty else for you to find. It’s a great mod for the iconic farming sim if you’ve exhausted all its native content. Without overhauling the beloved gameplay.
