Great gaming kings

We don’t know about you, but we’re feeling a bit patriotic here at Overclockers UK after this weekend’s coronation for King Charles III. Last time we felt like this was for the Platinum Jubilee when we looked back at our favourite gaming queens. So, what could be more appropriate than to reflect on our favourite gaming kings?

Alistair (Dragon Age)

While the Templar turned Grey Warden’s precise role depends on the myriad of choices a player can make throughout Dragon Age: Origins, Alistair assuming his role as King of Ferelden is most people’s personal canon as well as arguably his best fate. As one of the first companions introduced in the game, he’s already a special character for many players. His dry wit and optimism go on to cement him as a fan favourite. An ending where one of our most beloved companions scores such a huge dub as becoming freaking king earns him a nod as one of the greats.

Morgott, the Omen King (Elden Ring)

The outstanding Elden Ring is so full of brilliant bosses and deep lore that any that stands out has to be truly special. Such is the case with Morgott. This powerful demi-god once was Last of All Kings and, despite being imprisoned for being one of the Omen royals, stays loyal to the Golden Order that locked him up and defends the Royal Capital Leyndell. Rich, complex characters like this are what have made Elden Ring so beloved, which is why we’re putting some respect on Morgott’s name.

The Lich King (World of Warcraft)

As one of the best-known and certainly one of the evilest kings in video game history, the Lich King’s place on this list should come as no surprise. From his mind-melding powers to his impressive design, the mighty ruler of the icy Northrend lives up to his reputation. The eponymous Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack is one of World of Warcraft’s most popular and represents when the fervor for the game was at its zenith. A lot of that is down to the presentation of this undead monarch. Hail to the king indeed, baby.

Ganon (The Legend of Zelda)

The King of the Gerudo sure has one complicated history in Legend of Zelda canon but still stands as one of the most fearsome presences in this or any other franchise. This magic man is the reincarnation of the malicious god Demise, born of his sheer hate for Link. Since his first (chronological) appearance in Ocarina of Time, this Triforce of Power-wielding tyrant has dedicated himself to wreaking havoc across Hyrule. He’s even ruled it once or twice for +2 to fiefdom. He’ll be back later this week when Tears of the Kingdom is released on Friday May 12th and… we think we’re in love with him?

(Don’t look into his eyes, don’t look into his eyes, don’t look into his eyes, don’t look into his eyes, don’t look into his eyes, don’t look into his eyes, don’t look into his eyes, don’t…)

Bowser (Super Mario)

What can we say, except;

Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches-Peaches-Peaches I LOOOOoooOOOVE YOU!!!”

As if the King of the Koopas wasn’t already iconic enough, Jack Black went and made Bowser the moment just in time for us to reminisce. The decades-old nemesis of Mario is not only one of gaming’s most iconic kings but one of its best-known characters, period. He’s the turtle that puts your princesses in other castles, the kart driver that dominates the track, the monster of every sport that plumber wants to turn his hand to. He is simply…Bowser.

And if we hadn’t already mentioned, he’s got one hell of a set of pipes on him.
