Not sure what power supply is powering your rig? Whether you’re planning upgrades or just curious, here’s how to find out without frying your nerves… Or your PC.

If you’ve ever stared at your PC and wondered, “What PSU do I even have?” you’re not alone! Whether you’re thinking about upgrading your graphics card, troubleshooting a power issue, or just indulging your inner detective, knowing your PSU (Power Supply Unit) is essential. The good news? You might not even have to open your case to find out. Let’s walk through the easiest methods first, then get hands-on if we need to.
Start With the Easy Wins
Before you reach for a screwdriver, try these quick steps. First, check your order history. Whether you bought a pre-built PC or assembled it yourself, your PSU might be listed on your retailer’s website or in your email receipts.
Still no luck? Take a look at the back of your PC where the power cable plugs in. Some PSUs have a visible label or branding right there, giving you a fast answer without opening anything up.
Time to Pop the Case
If your PSU isn’t listed online and there’s no label visible on the back, it’s time to get hands-on. Don’t worry! Opening your case isn’t as scary as it sounds. Here’s how to safely check your power supply from the inside:
- Turn off and unplug your PC.
- Safety first! Shut it down fully and remove the power cable from the back. Next, make sure you press the power button a few times and wait a little while.
- Move to a clean, static-free workspace.
- Ideally, work on a wooden surface, and avoid carpets to reduce static buildup.
- Open the rear panel of your case.
- Most modern PC cases have thumb screws at the back, just loosen these and slide the panel off.
- Locate the PSU.
- It’s usually at the bottom rear of the case. Look for the big box where all the cables lead to.
- Check the label.
- The side of the PSU facing into the case should have a sticker or printed label with all the info, brand, wattage, efficiency rating (like 80 PLUS Gold), and model number.
- Put everything back together.
- Once you’re done, reattach the panel, plug your PC back in, and you’re good to go!
