Yes, it is true! You can jump into futuristic Night City in fully immersive VR… well, sort of. We’re breaking down everything you need to know to see Cyberpunk 2077 like never before.
First things first, VR Cyberpunk 2077 is by no means an officially intended way to play the game, but if there was ever a scenario and world where VR makes sense, this is it. Thanks to well-known VR modder Luke Ross, we can hack and slash our way through CD Project Red’s dystopian RPG like never before.
Is It Any Good?
Cyberpunk 2077 itself was no stranger to controversy, with several delays and a somewhat ‘buggy’ launch. Whilst most of these issues with the base game have now been fixed, you can still expect to see some of them crop up from time to time, with performance issues still widely prevalent on lower-end systems.
It is fair to say that you’ll need a pretty T h i c c gaming PC if you plan to play Cyberpunk in VR. CD Project Red’s Night City is genuinely breath-taking and oozing with personality. The ability to strap a headset on and look around freely adds an entirely new layer of freedom and realism to the world.
There are, however, some drawbacks. You’ll need to play with a controller. As much fun as physically slashing a samurai sword or aiming a smart pistol with your hand would be, it is sadly not possible. This also means you’ll be aiming attacks with your head by looking around, replacing your mouse as the direction input.
What Do I Need to Play Cyberpunk in VR?
Before you become fully immersed in the dystopia that is Night City, you’ll need to have a few things:
- To start with, you must own a copy of the game on Steam.
- You will need to become a supporter of the Luke Ross Pateron. This will allow you to download the relevant files for the mod, alongside receiving updates.
- Next, download and unzip the mod folder.
- Open your game directory. You can do this on Steam by right-clicking the game in your library and clicking ‘View Local Files’.
- Move the files from the unzipped folder into the ‘x64’ folder, which is located in the ‘bins’ within your Steam local files.
- Finally, run the .bat file in the x64 folder. Assuming everything went to plan, you should now be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 in virtual reality.
With the base game itself requiring a hefty gaming PC for high settings, you will need an especially powerful PC to play the game in VR. Max settings, high FPS, and hella RGB. If you know what you like and want the best VR gaming PC for the latest titles, this build is for you.
