How to Clean Your VR Headset

VR headsets are like gym equipment; they’re magnets for sweat, fingerprints, and a prime breeding ground for germs. In this article, we’re covering everything you need to know to keep yours fresh, clean, and ready for action.

How to Clean Your VR Headset

Why Bother with Regular Cleaning?

Clean VR gear isn’t just about hygiene. It’s about maximising immersion and extending your headset’s life. Dust and smudges can mess with the display clarity, and dirt buildup on lenses can lead to blurry images. I mean, do you really want to put a nasty, dusty, oily thing on your face for hours anyway?

Pre-Session Prep

A great simple way to start is to wash your hands. A quick wash keeps oils off your headset and reduces grime buildup, which is especially key if you’re sharing your VR headset with others.

Time for a quick wipe-down! Before and after each use, grab a dry microfiber cloth and wipe down the headset. This keeps dust off the lenses, preventing those annoying smudges that can ruin immersion. WARNING: Be gentle around the lenses. These can be very fragile, and a scratch will ruin your gaming experience. Avoid using any non-recommended cleaning solutions and refer to your headset’s manual for further guidance.

Deep Cleaning Your VR Headset

While keeping on top of your headset hygiene with a once-over before and after each session is great for maintenance, you’ll also want to do a deep clean every now and again.

Exterior Surface: Use alcohol-free anti-bacterial wipes for the outer parts (avoiding the lenses). Anything alcohol-based can be too harsh and might leave a residue that’s tough to get off later.

Facial Interface & Straps: If yours are detachable, go ahead and take them off to really get into all the nooks and crannies. Some fabric straps can even be hand-washed with mild soap and water – be sure to check your manufacturers’ guide first! Got a Silicone or replaceable foam cover? Even easier! Just give them a quick rinse and air-dry.

How To Keep Your VR Headset Clean Long-Term

If you’re using your VR headset a lot or even passing it around to others at parties, it might be worth investing in a VR cover. These slip over the facial interface and make cleaning simple. Pop one on, and you can just swap out and wash as needed. For extra protection, consider lens protectors to prevent accidental smudges while in use and lens covers for added protection from the sun when your headset’s off-duty.
