The AAA VR titles just keep coming! A portal into the Metro universe is opening with the announcement of a new VR Metro title coming later this year. Here’s everything we know so far.
Announced during Sony’s State of Play, Metro Awakening is set to be a story-driven first-person adventure built exclusively for VR and the most immersive title in the franchise to date. Launching later in 2024, Awakening transports players back into the familiar world of Moscow’s haunted and dangerous subway tunnels. Ghosts of the past, the horrors above, and more await us in this unforgiving post-apocalyptic world.
Staying true to the series’ hallmark storytelling, Metro Awakening will blend the franchise’s atmospheric exploration, storytelling, and stealth combat staples. There’s an arsenal of hand-crafted weapons you’ll need to reload manually, all whilst exploring terrifying tunnels in what looks to be a heart-pounding VR experience.

Penned as a prequel to Metro 2033, gamers assume the role of Serdar, a doctor on a quest to reunite with his wife by travelling through the mutant-ridden tunnels of post-apocalyptic Moscow. Metro Awakening’s story will see Serdar face situations that test beliefs in the rational and tempts him to embrace the awakening of the being he is destined to become.
Faithful to the franchise’s origins, Awakening will arm players with some of Metro’s most iconic survival gear. You’ll need to scramble for gas mask filters, and feel your pulse quicken as your headlamp flickers in the darkness. As you stealth your way through the man-made purgatory of civilisation’s last refuge and tomb, ammo will play a large part in Metro Awakening’s gameplay. As in previous titles in the series, ammunition will be limited to what you can scrounge up or purchase, meaning you’ll need to think carefully before every shot.
How To Play Metro Awakening
We can’t wait for Metro’s most immersive game yet to launch later this year on PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest, and Steam VR. Non-VR gamers don’t have to be too upset, either! Development for the next mainline instalment of the Metro series is continuing separately at 4A Games.
