thanks for responding matt yea rdping from my desktop to a laptop in the same house (laptop has crap resolution and rdp will use the monitor res, also lack room for the laptop in my desktop setup - works really well actually)

but whilst RDP is active the main pc is idle, since the laptop does all the grunt work. I've noticed it happened yesterday with rdp too and the day before, but ive also noticed it happened when i was on the desktop too. this was all with gen 4 and resize bar enabled (already tested disabling resize bar and it still crashed).

doesnt appear to happen in game at all.

tried it doesn't make any difference, only thing that appears to help is setting pci gen 3 specifically. (no random reboot since swapping from gen 4 to 3 thus far).

sorry forgot to mention I'm on 21.1.1 too and chipset drivers 2.10.13.408. (both latest)

edit what feels like 500.. also got 2 gen 3 nvme drives.
Give my suggestion a go.

Be interested to see if anyone else has the same issue, and if your workaround fixes it.

Idle restarts can also be caused by overly aggressive curve optimizer settings but you have a 3900X so that does not apply to you.

sorry mate forgot to say, i already tried it in regards to the "Power Supply Idle Control and set that to typical" and it didn't make a difference. i actually set it in both places on the board.

so far the gen 3 change seems ok, need to run it for a few days for more solid results. wonder if its some kind gen 4 issue with the f32 bios.. no curve on the 3900x unfortunately :(

anyone else having to swap from pci gen 4 to 3 to stop random reboots on a 6800/xt? cpu and memory are bone stock, only change is the gpu. happens roughly once a day and whilst in rdp of all things. seems to be in lower power modes? temps are amazing so it aint that. separate 8 pin cables for the psu and its made by seasonic.
tried disabling resize bar but that didnt help.
didn't happen with vega and pci mode on auto.
3900x
x570 auros pro
850w revolt pro
powercolor 6800
1 sabrent rocket gen 3 1tb nvme(bottom slot)
1 kingston gen 3 nvme drive (top slot)

Are you using a pci-e extension cable? Ive not had any random reboots on my 6800or 6800xt, but i was getting them on my 3090, but that was power related (750w) fixed by changing to a 1000w supply.

Funnily enough the random reboots were on a seasonic 750w titanium and platinum, got it on both those cards.

I also heard using after market cables rather than seasonics own have caused people bother but it didnt fix mine

yes i am using extensions, but ive not had a single crash since swapping to gen 3 so far and had 2 this monring on gen 4 in matter of 30 minutes apart. the extensions where fine with the 56 pulling around 300+ watts (this card is pulling way less - even with the transients, but i will keep them in mind if it happens again. that will be the next debug step essentially. so thanks as its a good call.
i use phanteks power cables that came with the psu itself and then phanteks extensions. (actually been debating getting some new ones - nicer ones)
i think the problem with aftermarket extensions or cables normally is the cables arnt up to scratch awg wise by sounds of it and arnt rated for the load. but will test without if it happens again.

had 1 reply on oc.net
"That's exactly my problem. With an old Vega64 (PCI Gen3), everything was fine. Maybe lowering CPU VDDP (not cLDO_VDDP in the AMD menu) helps you too? It would at least be interesting, if it's just my system behaving strangely or if it's more of a real workaround for this PCIE 4 issue."
https://www.overclock.net/threads/gigabyte-x570-aorus-owners-thread.1728360/post-28728243

maybe it is a board issue with gen 4 then since im in a gigabyte thread.

Well, looks like my shiny new toy is going back. :( I have tried everything but the displayport connectors are not working for visuals, despite the sound seeming to work ok through them. Gutted, as I guess I'll be waiting a while now for a replacement.

That sucks, if it was an mba card powercolor, they had some spares so hopefully a nice quick swap for you.

I have a Sapphire nitro+ RX6800 and a 1440 @144hz monitor. The vram is running at full speed all the time but if i restrict my monitor to 60hz it steps all the way down to idle. Has anybody with a rx6800 and same spec monitor noticed the same behaviour?

Expected behaviour, it’s due to the vertical blank timing on your monitor that requires a maximum memory clock. You might find that at the desktop dropping the refresh to 120 may allow a lower clock due to the timing changing to fall within the sweet zone.
