External Drives and HDD'S

External storage is simply a method of storing or retrieving data that is held externally to your standard internal storage solution. This can be in the form of external HDDs/ SSD’s including NAS and caddy’s / external enclosures, external DVD drives, SATA/IDE 2.5/3.5” docks, USB flash memory sticks, flash memory cards or even your phones internal flash storage.

In this section, we will cover the 2 main non-flash storage options – External HDD/SSD storage drives and External CD/DVD Drives. If you do wish to read about flash storage - head over to the Flash Memory section.

External Storage Drives

External storage drives are devices that allow you to store files and data externally. This enables you to expand your internal storage without having to have any hardware knowledge. The smaller pocket size external drives also allow you to hold large amounts of data – Far in excess of what a USB flash drive can accommodate.

There are several advantages to this including:

  • External storage will not be affected if your system suffers an internal hardware failure.
  • You can attach the drive and access the information on any PC or Laptop - just like a gigantic USB memory stick. Even some consoles and Smart TV’s work with these drives!
  • Backup key data from multiple devices or even take a complete system ‘image’.
  • Easily share data between multiple computers using NAS technology.

What types of external storage drives are available?

External drives come in a wide array of capacities, dimensions and connection standards that cover a variety of purposes from home to office. You can even create your own custom solution by adding a chosen HDD / SSD to an external 3.5” or 2.5” caddy.

What are the 2 main methods of connecting an external drive?

USB: Most modern Desktop and portable storage solutions use USB 3.0/3.1 because it’s very fast (Up to 10Gbps), secure, hot-swappable and backward compatible with USB 2.0. This means your new external storage drive will even work with older hardware. In the future, we are likely to see a shift to a USB type C / Thunderbolt 3 connection as its mind-blowingly fast (40Gbps) and can render the use of a separate power cable obsolete as it can deliver around 100W. Devices that only use the USB standard are highly cost-effective and perfect for those who don’t need network or cloud connectivity. With that said more and more routers are coming with built-in USB ports which would enable your standard external USB HDD to share the data with many of your internally networked (including WIFI connected) personal devices simultaneously.

Network: Wired or wireless, Network-attached storage (NAS) is efficient and allows your data to be shared securely with all of your internal networked computers at up to 1Gbps. Some NAS units additionally allow you to share your data in the cloud allowing you to access your data anywhere in the world across a multitude of devices.

We will cover more on this topic in the NAS Devices section.

What type of external storage drive should I choose?

This depends on a multitude of factors but here are a few of the everyday types of user and what we advise:

General Desktop Users: If you want a solution that never leaves your desk and is connected directly to your PC, a standard desktop drive such as the 4TB WD Elements Desktop drive is perfect. It Connects via the backward compatible ultra-fast USB 3.0 format and is able to hold up to 4TB of data (model dependent). Generally, external desktop drives need plugging into an external power source and are not classed as portable.

Console Gamers (Sony PlayStation (PS4) / Microsoft Xbox (Xbox One)): As with Desktop users a console gamer would generally store the data within the internal storage. Unfortunately, this is limited and soon fills up with downloaded games and ‘save’s’. By simply adding an external SSHD you can simply and cheaply increase your storage without having to upgrade your console. You might also notice a speed boost when loading games!

Students and travelers: It doesn’t matter if you are traveling the world or between lectures - you will want something small, lightweight and fast. In this instance, a 2.5” external HDD would be perfect. If you have a small budget but require a high capacity drive choose a standard non SSD variant.

If only the fastest drive will do – Choose an external SSD! We also sell ruggedized drives such as the ADATA SD600  which we highly recommend if you are prone to the odd bout of clumsiness or need that extra piece of mind.

Media lovers and tech-savvy families: A good quality NAS solution is perfect for Media lovers and family’s as it allows the ability to stream your media and data to all your connected devices including computers, laptops, games consoles, tablets, and smartphones.

Home office and small business users: In the office environment you generally want to be able to share data between all of your networked systems – A NAS would in this situation be perfect. You can even grant varying levels of access to different employees.

External DVD / CD Drives

Built-in CD and DVD drives are becoming rarer by the day as most applications and media are either downloaded or streamed - Even Microsoft has started to make the switch by selling its OS (Operating system) on a USB drive for the first time. Unfortunately, the days of the physical disk are numbered. If you have recently bought a PC without a drive but find yourself needing one, don’t worry! We have you covered… The easiest method to add the capability to your desktop computer is by using an external CD/DVD drive that needs zero tech knowhow to install – Simply plug and play!

There are several reasons you might opt for an external including:

  • Lack of case drive bays in modern cases
  • Small form factor computers
  • Upgrading to support Blu-Ray
  • Location – You want the drive on top of the desk away from the PC
  • Lack of tech-Knowledge to install
