What Hardware is in a PS5?

The PlayStation 5 is a powerful gaming console, which Sony developed in conjunction with AMD. As such, it is equipped with custom AMD gaming hardware. It boasts an innovative system on a chip (SoC), with both the CPU and GPU located on a single die. The CPU is an eight core, sixteen thread processor based on AMD Zen 2 architecture, while the GPU utilises RDNA 2 architecture and features 36 compute units. These are both paired with 16GB of unified GDDR6 SDRAM, facilitating exceptional gaming results in the latest AAA games.

Alongside this, each PlayStation 5 is equipped with a blazing fast integrated NVMe SSD. This can vary between models, with most coming with either an 825GB or 1TB option. However, you can upgrade your storage, thanks to the easy-to-access M.2 slot underneath the top cover. With this, you can expand your consoles storage solution with up to 8TB extra space by adding a 2230 to 22110 PCIe Gen 4 x4 M.2 SSD.

Furthermore, the extensive I/O support facilitates outstanding connectivity with the PlayStation 5. At the rear of the system, there is an HDMI 2.1 output, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, and a 1G Ethernet connector. Meanwhile, the front of the console can feature a USB-C and USB-A or two USB-C ports, depending on the model. Plus, you can harness wireless performance on the PlayStation 5, as it is equipped with both Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.
