Refresh Rates, Tearing and Input Lag
Most monitors operate at a fixed refresh rate such as 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz, or 360Hz. Depending on the game you play and the specification of your PC, your frame rate (FPS) changes in accordance with how intensively your graphics card has to work. FreeSync links your monitors refresh rate to your GPUs FPS reducing screen tearing, motion blur, and more. Tearing occurs when the GPU finishes rendering frames and sends them directly to the monitor, even if it has not finished refreshing. Previously to reduce screen tearing gamers have had to utilise VSync which when turned on limits your FPS to the refresh rate of your monitor. However, when enabled VSync can create input lag. Input lag happens when the GPU holds the image until the monitor is ready to display it, thus creating a lag in the imaging.
AMD FreeSync Monitors
FreeSync utilises adaptive synchronisation technology that supports a dynamic refresh rate and eliminates screen tearing, visual latency, stuttering, and input lag. A communication issue between the GPU and monitor is at the heart of any lag or tearing problem. FreeSync technology eliminates any choppiness by ensuring that the monitor adapts to the framerate of the output device, instead of vice versa. This also allows for a refresh rate of up to 360Hz and beyond.
Initially developed by AMD, the technology came about as a response to NVIDIA's G-Sync, which uses proprietary NVIDIA hardware to control the refresh rate. FreeSync monitors, however, use software as their control method, keeping costs down. In fact, what's amazing about FreeSync is that it is basically "zero-cost" software that ensures smooth gameplay without the need for any proprietary hardware. The only requirements are a monitor that is compatible with DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync, a compatible GPU with a DisplayPort connection.
