Take Storage On-the-Go with Flash Memory

Today Flash memory is everywhere including our Smartphones and Tablets and Computers. With production costs falling, capacities ever expanding and the ability to stably and securely hold masses of data while being able read/write near instantaneously has led to the flash storage revolution.

What is Flash Storage?

Flash memory is a type of non-volatile memory that doesn’t need any power to retain information - Even if the device has had no power for years the data within is safe. Based upon EPPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) of yesteryear there are 2 main flash variants, NAND (Not And) and NOR (Not Or).

NOR

NOR is generally used for BIOS ROM utilised in things like Motherboards. It is perfect at executing code, has a high read speed and is very low power. It is also flawless in quality and contains little to no errors.

NAND

NAND on the other hand is permitted certain faults allowing for cheaper production. It also has a much higher write and erase speed making it perfect for storage applications. NAND is also very dense as the cells are connected in series which allows for much higher capacity storage.

Are there different types of NAND?

  • SLC NAND: Single Level Cell NAND is simply the best. Perfect for high performance, endurance, reliability and low power application. SLC stores 1 bit of data per memory cell offering very fast read/write capabilities.
  • MLC NAND: Multi Level Cell NAND is the most popular flash memory combining low production costs with great performance. Storing 2 bits per cell, MLC NAND is good for high density solutions such as SSD’s, tablets and smartphones. MLC offers twice the capacity of SLC in the same die surface area.
  • TLC NAND: Triple Level Cell is used in most general consumer grade applications and offers the highest cell density. In general TLC will have lower performance and endurance specifications than SLC or MLC. Storing 3 bits per cell, TLC NAND are designed for value and primarily used in USB Flash Drives and other portable media devices.
  • 3D NAND: Three Dimensional NAND uses an innovative architecture that provides 3X the capacity of planar NAND technologies by stacking the cells. It additionally provides better performance and reliability. The downside is that it is expensive to produce as it requires incredible precision to manufacturer.

USB Flash Drives

NAND Flash is perfect for all kinds of storage and USB Flash drives are no exception. These drives allow you to carry all sorts of data in a highly pocket friendly, compact form factor.

  • When purchasing a Flash drive there are a few things to keep in mind including capacity, USB Type and read/write speeds as it will all affect the overall speed of the drive. Some of the more expensive USB 3.0 drives can match SSD’s for speed - hitting a staggering 450MB/s read! The higher the read and write speeds the faster the drive with USB 3.0/3.1 offering substantial increases over USB 2.0 drives.

Memory Cards

Memory cards are far harder to understand due to the multiple classes and versions available. The most widely used today is the SD card which comes in 3 sizes: Standard, Micro and Mini. These then come in 3 main capacity types SDSC (1MB - 2GB), SDHC (2GB – 32GB) and SDXC (32GB – 2 TB).

On top of this there are speed classes which are suited to different applications. Ensure you buy a card that is compliant with your device for best operation:

UHS SD

UHS (Ultra High Speed) is designed for modern devices that need the very fastest write speeds. UHS can handle things like 4K video recording, Full HD Video, HD still images and continuous shooting.

  • Class U3: (SD BUS MODE UHS I/II): Minimum Write speed 30MB/s (Max 312MB/s)
  • Class U1: (SD BUS MODE UHS I/II): Minimum Write speed 10MB/s (Max 104MB/s

SD

SD are your everyday cards and will work with most generic devices. Class 10 is great for Full HD video recording and images as is a class 6 compliant card. Class 2 is designed for standard video recording and images.

  • Class 10: SD BUS MODE: HS (High Speed): Minimum Write speed 10MB/s (Max 25 MB/s)
  • Class 6: SD BUS MODE: DS (Default Speed): Minimum Write speed 6MB/s (Upto 12.5MB/s)
  • Class 4: SD BUS MODE: DS (Default Speed): Minimum Write speed 4MB/s
  • Class 2: SD BUS MODE: DS (Default Speed): Minimum Write speed 2MB/s
