Review 4 Jul 2014 I've been a gamer for over 20 years, and I've used scores of game pads on a variety of systems. I can say with confidence that the 360 controller is one of the finest I've ever owned. ... more...

Gamepads for PC

While the majority of PC gamers prefer the mouse and keyboard for their gaming setup, there are select group who prefer the use of gamepads. In genres such as first-person-shooters and real-time-strategy games, the accuracy of a mouse and the tactile response of a keyboard is the number one means to play, others such as platformers, racing games and third-person-navigation games can see an improved experience from a gamepad.

Xbox 360

Available in both wireless and wired choices the Microsoft Xbox 360 gamepad provides many options for visual preferences and customizability. Being the dominant choice for PC gamers, the Xbox 360 controller has official plug and play support for both Windows and Xbox, with native game support for the vast majority of games on the market. Built with dual analog thumb sticks, two bumbers and two triggers, the Xbox 360 controller has proven to be the most comfortable and reliable gamepad, with included vibration feedback to enhance the experience.

Xbox One

Making slight adjustments to the Xbox 360 gamepad’s design, the Microsoft Xbox One controller features a redesigned D-pad for greater responsiveness and precision, improved thumb sticks for better grip and tactile triggers and bumpers for better grip and usage. Noticeably the biggest improvement from the Xbox 360 gamepad is the implementation of the impulse triggers. When integrated efficiently from the game developers, these triggers allow for an enhanced feeling of vibrational feedback that’s proportional to the feeling of in-game actions. This allows for games to provide precise physical feedback that’s directional throughout the gamepad’s various rumble motors – simulating a feeling of weight in regards to movement.

For racing games which make use of this feature, gamers can feel the change in the grip of their tyres when transitioning from one surface to another, the weight of their vehicle shifting when cutting corners, and the full intensity of a crash when getting aggresive amongst their competitors. Retaining the same button layout as its predecessor means the gamepad gives better ease of use for button configuration for the game developers, improving the gamers experience when moving from one gamepad to the next.

Xbox One Elite

Improving on the default design of the Xbox One gamepad, the Xbox One Elite controller gives way for a variety of physical customisation and choices for style. Making use of interchangeable buttons, the gamepad allows for multiple choices for the D-pad – constructed from stainless steel, height adjustments for the gamepad’s analog sticks, and four paddles on the rear of the build – allowing for duplicate actions of the primary buttons for ease-of-use and player preference. The Xbox One Elite gamepad also makes use of a stronger construction and included accessories, with personal profiles to be created on a game-by-game basis.

Alternatives

For gamers who choose to use alternative gamepads, choices from Thrustmaster such as the Dual Analog 4 also prove to be a great solution. Ideal for steering in racing games, the Dual Analog 4 is an excellent alternative for steering wheels. Compatible through Bluetooth and providing a wide range of support, mobile gamepads such as the SteelSeries Nimbus and the SteelSeries Stratus V2 feature their own unique designs, making them great for gaming on-the-go.

Built for the competitive gamer, looking to maximise their skills to the fullest potential, there is no better option for the Beat ‘em Up fanatic than the flexibility and design of an arcade fightstick. Dating back to the competitive nature and the level of excitement that would flood the arcades amongst the release of Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Primal Rage and Killer Instinct, fighting sticks still remain the number one choice for fast movements, high reliability and ultimate precision.
