AMD LogoFour years of work on the "Zen" microarchitecture for AMD's range of x86 processors have culminated in the chip manufacturer retaking the high-end segment at the beginning of 2017. CPUs bearing the Ryzen name offer multiple cores along with an unbeatable price-performance ratio in addition to Multithreading on all but the entry-level range of CPUs.

In addition to the AMD Ryzen Quadcore-, Hexacore- and Octacore CPUs for gamers and content creators (Ryzen 7 / 5 / 3), AMD offers an additional series of scalable server CPUs codenamed "Naples" bearing the retail name Ryzen Epyc which are also based on the "Zen" microarchitecture. The bridge between server-grade CPUs and processors for gamers and content creators is formed by AMD's Ryzen Threadripper. Endowed with relatively high clock-speeds, something that benefits many games and applications, and up to 16 cores with 32 threads for picture and video editing, Ryzen Threadripper represents a platform designed from the ground up for multi-tasking.

Threadripper provides a full 64 PCIe 3.0 lanes and offers support for gaming systems with two full high-end graphics cards as well as multiple NVMe PCIe SSDs. Furthermore at least 1 TB DDR4-RAM will be usable in ultra-fast Quad-Channel mode, supporting native clock-speeds of up to 2.666 MHz, thereby offering professional applications and server functions the requisite capacities in terms of memory. Depending on the motherboard, and with the help of overclocking, it is even possible for even higher memory frequencies to be used in order to raise the performance of the Ryzen Threadripper yet further.

The AMD Ryzen TR 1950X 3,4 GHz 16-Core Processor at a Glance:

AMD Ryzen Threadripper
  • 16 "Zen" cores with a 180 Watt Thermal Design Power (TDP)
  • 32 Threads thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT)
  • Very high single- and multi-threaded performance
  • Base clock of 3,4 GHz & 4,0 GHz Turbo with Precision Boost
  • Automatic overclocking function XFR
  • Unlocked multiplier for manual overclocking (unlocked CPU)

AMD Zen - Scalable Architecture with Precision Boost Technology

AMD Ryzen Logo

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X is a "Zen"-generation CPU with 16 physical CPU cores on two CPU dies which, thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), are each capable of processing two threads at the same time to double the effective number of cores with an additional 16 virtual cores to make for a total of 32 effective cores. The 16-core CPU functions at a high clock frequency of 3,4 GHz per core, adjusting itself in real-time according to the workload with the help of Precision Boost - whether in gaming or applications - in precise 25 MHz increments, up to a Turbo clock of 4,0 GHz while remaining within the TDP.

Furthermore the chip architecture functions more quietly and with low temperatures than its predecessors and specially designed and optimised to function at high clock frequencies, resulting in drastically improved energy efficiency and, in respect to the CPU clock frequency and the number of CPU cores, a moderate Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 180 Watts. The impressive performance specifications of the CPU demonstrate AMD's deft investments in terms of time and research, and this has paid off in terms of the massive Instructions Per Clock (IPC) increases in comparison to its Excavator predecessor. This is true in both classic single-thread applications as well as in highly parallelised multi-threaded applications where the processor consistently maintains optimal performance.

The silicon is lithographed using the advanced 14 nm FinFET manufacturing process with stapled transistors (also known as 3D transistors). The striking scale reduction has resulted in more space becoming available on the CPU die, and the size of the Threadripper CPU enables the integration of a total of 8 MB L2 Cache and a full 32 MB Level 3 Cache at the heart of the processor. Due to the smart control of the cache buffer and "Smart Prefetch" algorithms for highly-efficient jump predictions, Ryzen is a byword for fast and smooth data processing under all usage scenarios - ranging from gaming and virtual reality to cloud computing and virtualisation.

Extended Frequency Range (XFR) for Automatic Overclocking

AMD Extended Frequency Range (XFR) The days of racking your brains perfecting the art of the manual overclock are at an end as the CPU can control the entire process itself: The AMD Ryzen TR 1950X is equipped with the revolutionary Auto-OC feature known as Extended Frequency Range (XFR) to allow the processor's clock frequency to be drastically increased over the factory-set boost clock, provided sufficient cooling is supplied to the processor. As soon as the integrated CPU sensors detect the need for greater heat dissipation, the Ryzen CPU adjusts its clock rates to the respective cooling solution accordingly.

User intervention is therefore unnecessary - overclocking has never been so easy! Depending on whether CPU temperatures are being maintained by a comparably-small air cooler, a large (dual-) tower cooler, a more capable AiO or custom water cooler, or even extreme liquid cooling options like LN2, XFR affords access to premium- and enthusiast-level clock frequencies tailored to the degree of cooling performance provided.

Unlocked CPU: Foolproof Overclocking Thanks to the Unlocked Multiplier

All AMD Ryzen CPUs are "unlocked" and come with - as was the case with the "Black Editions" and "K" variants of earlier product ranges - an unlocked multiplier that allows overclockers to attain relatively high clock rates in a virtually foolproof manner. The aforementioned overclocks are easily achievable via manual alterations to the BIOS or UEFI, or by means of software tools designed for increasing the maximum factory-set boost clocks, when paired with a compatible OC-capable AMD X399 motherboard along with sufficient cooling.

Cutting-Edge & Luxuriously-Featured: The TR4 Platform

AMD Ryzen Threadripper BoxMotherboards with the LGA Socket TR4 serve as the foundation for the AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs and offer the newest connectivity features. The CPU itself possesses 12 dedicated PCI-Express 3.0 lanes for compatibility with modern SATA or PCI-Express SSDs using the M.2 or U.2 formats while offering support for the specially developed NVM Express protocol (NVMe for short). An additional 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes deliver more than enough bandwidth for up to four high-end gaming graphics cards. Additional PCIe lanes for data storage devices, expansion cards and peripherals are provided separately depending on the chipset of the motherboard. The TR4 platform even brings external device ports like USB 3.1 Gen 2 with Type-A and/or Type-C connectors as well as high data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s

The CPU's integrated memory controller supports TR4 motherboards as well as speedy and energy-efficient DDR4-RAM in Quad-Channel mode with or without ECC error correction. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor continually monitors temperature, voltage, and frequency to allow optimum energy usage in any scenario. Even in SIMD instruction set extensions AMD is now pulling up equal to the competition and has now mastered AVX2 (Advanced Vector Extensions, which enable dramatic performance improvements in floating point calculations in scientific simulations, video-, picture- and audio editing, as well as video games and multimedia applications, to the extent the application in question supports the feature.

Note: This is a "WOF" boxed version without a bundled CPU cooler. AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs require a TR4-compatible motherboard. The CPU comes bundled with an adapter plate, the installation of which allows a range of All-in-One water-coolers that can be used on Ryzen Threadripper CPUs and X399 motherboards.

Attention: Due to the size of the Ryzen Threadripper CPU the TR4 socket is different compared to traditional sockets. Please follow the motherboard manufacturer's installation instructions carefully when installing the CPU!
