An M.2 drive is a small form factor storage device, which directly interfaces with the motherboard. You can find M.2 drives in a variety of lengths with the most popular form factor being 80mm long. These drives can connect to a motherboard via one of two interfaces, SATA or NVMe. When choosing your M.2 drive, it is important to understand what type of drive your motherboard supports, as both SATA and NVMe drives feature different keying on their connectors. SATA drives have two indents into their connector, while NVMe feature a single indent.
With data transfer rates of up to 6Gbps, SATA drives utilise the same interface technology found in many 2.5" drives. Meanwhile, NVMe drives harness the much faster PCIe interface, which has a theoretical bandwidth of 64GB/s at PCIe 4.0 speeds.
